Brand Overview

Skinfix's Eczema+ Hand Repair Cream has been slightly reformulated from the original but remains a great product for desert-dry hands. The biggest difference that you’ll notice is that the word “eczema” was added to the name. Eczema is a condition characterized by dry, flaking skin and persistent itchiness. It’s true that this formula can help alleviate those symptoms thanks to its beneficial mix of ingredients. Just keep in mind that eczema is best diagnosed by a medical professional, because many cases will require more help than what over-the-counter skin care can provide.

Housed in an opaque squeeze tube with a flip-top cap, Eczema+ Hand Repair Cream’s plush cream texture glides across hands, leaving a comforting feel. You’ll want to allow a minute or two to let the formula fully sink in, but once it does, it sets to a non-greasy finish.

Ingredient-wise, it's great from start to finish. Front and center, you’ll find a 1% concentration of active ingredient colloidal oatmeal—a proven anti-irritant that can soothe the redness and itchiness associated with eczema. Additional soothing agents including allantoin, aloe, and chamomile give the skin-comforting formula a boost.

When it comes to relieving dryness, Eczema+ Hand Repair Cream boasts an array of emollients that will help restore moisture, including powerhouses like antioxidant-rich shea butter, sunflower seed oil, replenishing glycerin and sweet almond oil. All of these help keep skin’s barrier resilient, a key factor in controlling symptoms of eczema.

All in all, this is a well-formulated hand cream for anyone with dry hands, eczema or not. If you plan on using it during the day, remember to top it off with sunscreen.

Note: The rosemary extract this contains may have a fragrant component depending on which part of the plant was used and how it was extracted. However, we could not detect its scent and are not concerned about its potential to irritate skin in this form.

Pros:
  • Plush cream texture glides across hands leaving a comforting feel.
  • Contains colloidal oatmeal—a research proven anti-irritant for relieving dry, itchy skin.
  • Additional soothing agents bolster the skin-calming effect.
  • Beneficial emollients and antioxidants round out the formula to help nourish skin's barrier.
Cons:
  • None.

Canadian-based Skinfix is part of a growing number of skincare brands targeting a particular niche. Instead of trying to solve every skincare issue out there, it has a very specific target audience; in this case, its people who have chronically dry, sensitive skin thats prone to issues like eczema and contact dermatitis.

The brands site begins, as many do, with an origin story that relates the tale of Thomas Dixon, who crafted his own healing ointment for dry and cracked skin in England back in the 1850s. The formula was passed down for generations, and the Dixon family continued to make it after they moved to Nova Scotia decades later, where they eventually sold it in pharmacies. Skinfix as a brand didnt come into being until 2006, when Dixons great-great-great granddaughter decided to make the concept into a skincare company, with the focus remaining on treating chronic skin issues and very dry skin.

For the most part, Skinfix gets it right. The majority of its products are fragrance-free and contain beneficial plant oils, skin-identical ingredients, and anti-irritants in rich, thick balms that will serve to soothe and treat cracked, dry skin. The line also includes gentle cleansers that are mild enough even for use on babies and children, whose skin is still developing.

In fact, the only misstep is the inclusion in a handful of products of fragrant tree resins (such as balsam tolu and benzoin) that could irritate very sensitive skin. They arent in large amounts in any of those formulas, and those with normal skin should have no issues with them, but for the sensitive skin they are designed for, they are not ideal.

Aside from this, Skinfix is a promising brand, with many products we recommend. The brand is available in the United States at Target, C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries, and diapers.com.

Strengths: Mostly gentle, effective formulas to treat dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin; packaging keeps ingredients stable; most products are fragrance-free.

Weaknesses: Some products contain tree resins that could potentially irritate sensitive skin.
