Brand Overview

Cetaphil's Gentle Makeup Removing Wipes don't bring much new to the table for this category of skincare products as they are not as gentle as claimed even though they do contain a mix of plant-bases soothing ingredients (but some problems can't be overcome with this kind of formulary touch).

The soft cloth wipes come in a resealable pack of 25, and while they're saturated in a cleansing solution, in use they're not so wet as to be drippy or messy which is a problem for some wipes. The wipes are effective at removing dirt, oil, and most makeup (though not waterproof makeup). Skin feels softer after using them, and the cleansing fluid on the wipes doesn't make skin feel dry or tight.

The issue is that these wipes are marketed as "ultra-gentle" and as being suitable for "even sensitive skin," but they really aren't. As mentioned above, soothing ingredients like aloe, chamomile, and green tea are on hand; however, while not in a large amount, there's also the fragrance ingredient ethylene brassylate, and fragrance is irritating for skin. For those with sensitive skin it doesn't take much fragrance at all to cause irritation and inflammation—same goes for using these wipes to remove eye makeup.

The fragrance is less of an issue if you wash your face after using these wipes, but it's still disappointing, especially since there are wipes available in the same price range that leave the fragrance out. For some of our favorites, see our lists of Best Cleansers and Best Makeup Removers.

  • Soft wipes are effective at removing dirt, oil, and makeup.
  • Doesn't make skin feel dry or tight.
  • Contains fragrance that can irritate skin.
  • The fragrance makes these wipes iffy for use around the eyes.

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
