Brand Overview

Cetaphil's Gentle Makeup Remover is a low-frills but top-notch approach to makeup removal, and ably succeeds in doing what it claims.

Gentle Makeup Remover is a bi-phase makeup remover, meaning it has a water-like "liquid" portion and an oil-like portion (silicone in this case) that you mix together to form one solution. It comes in a plastic bottle and you're instructed to shake well and then pour some of the mixture out onto a cotton pad, then gently swipe it across your face to remove makeup.

The fragrance-free liquid does exactly what's claimed: It easily removes makeup (even waterproof makeup) in just a couple of passes. The formula includes gentle cleansers and silicones to do its job, with the welcome addition of a couple of skin-soothing ingredients. Makeup removers like this can be used before or after cleansing.

Cetaphil isn't a brand we thought would add a makeup remover to their line (you typically see this from brands that also or only offer makeup); however, their first attempt is an excellent option for all skin types, and the price for its size makes it a beauty bargain!

The only issue is that there is a small amount of the ingredient benzalkonium chloride present. This is an ingredient that can be sensitizing for some people, which is not what you want in a makeup remover. We recommend if you do choose this product to wash your face with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser afterward (which you should be doing anyway to make certain all the last traces of makeup are removed).

Pros:
  • Easily removes makeup (even waterproof formulas).
  • Contains some skin-soothing ingredients.
  • Fragrance free.
  • Inexpensive and generously sized.
Cons:
  • None.
Jar Packaging: No

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
