Brand Overview

Skinfix's Gentle Eczema Balm has a simple name and simple ingredients—and in this case, that's a very good thing! This product's formula puts it near the top of Skinfix's dry skin products, and earns our highest rating.

This balm, like Skinfix's other balm products, comes in a plastic tube with a flip-top cap. It's fragrance-free and somewhat thick thanks to beeswax and paraffin it contains, though it is easy to spread across skin and absorbs within a couple of minutes.

Colloidal oatmeal is listed among this balm's active ingredient and that's good news, since oatmeal is an anti-irritant, and one of the chief issues of eczema is irritation. Other ingredients on this (relatively) short list include additional anti-irritants like allantoin and tried-and-true emollients like sunflower oil, petrolatum, and jojoba seed oil.

While these might not add up to the most sophisticated formula out there, they do make for a product whose use will result in softer, less irritated, smoother skin, which is the goal here. Gentle Eczema Balm is a good option for kids, who have more sensitive skin than adults, or for anyone who has a damaged barrier and is looking for a product that will help heal it. For those reasons this earns our recommendation, and our highest rating.

Pros:
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Contains anti-irritants and emollients to soothe dry, flaky skin.
Cons:
  • None.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

Skinfix Gentle Eczema Balm was formulated specifically for baby's delicate skin, and helps reduce chronic flare-ups while soothing irritated, dry skin on contact. Infused with 2% colloidal oatmeal and emollient oils, this nut-free balm has the magical ability to calm and relieve both babies and moms.
Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 15%, Colloidal Oatmeal 2%, Allantoin 1%. Inactive Ingredients: Beeswax, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Paraffin, Petrolatum, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol.

Canadian-based Skinfix is part of a growing number of skincare brands targeting a particular niche. Instead of trying to solve every skincare issue out there, it has a very specific target audience; in this case, its people who have chronically dry, sensitive skin thats prone to issues like eczema and contact dermatitis.

The brands site begins, as many do, with an origin story that relates the tale of Thomas Dixon, who crafted his own healing ointment for dry and cracked skin in England back in the 1850s. The formula was passed down for generations, and the Dixon family continued to make it after they moved to Nova Scotia decades later, where they eventually sold it in pharmacies. Skinfix as a brand didnt come into being until 2006, when Dixons great-great-great granddaughter decided to make the concept into a skincare company, with the focus remaining on treating chronic skin issues and very dry skin.

For the most part, Skinfix gets it right. The majority of its products are fragrance-free and contain beneficial plant oils, skin-identical ingredients, and anti-irritants in rich, thick balms that will serve to soothe and treat cracked, dry skin. The line also includes gentle cleansers that are mild enough even for use on babies and children, whose skin is still developing.

In fact, the only misstep is the inclusion in a handful of products of fragrant tree resins (such as balsam tolu and benzoin) that could irritate very sensitive skin. They arent in large amounts in any of those formulas, and those with normal skin should have no issues with them, but for the sensitive skin they are designed for, they are not ideal.

Aside from this, Skinfix is a promising brand, with many products we recommend. The brand is available in the United States at Target, C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries, and diapers.com.

Strengths: Mostly gentle, effective formulas to treat dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin; packaging keeps ingredients stable; most products are fragrance-free.

Weaknesses: Some products contain tree resins that could potentially irritate sensitive skin.
