Brand Overview

Cetaphil's Gentle Cleansing Bar is a no-frills bar cleanser that's main selling point is that it's gentle. For the most part that is the case, but the problem is that the ingredients that keep it in bar form can be a problem for skin, which is why this earns our lowest, one-star rating.

Gentle Cleansing Bar is, for the most part, made up gentle detergent cleansers, preservatives, and some emollients. Its issues start early on in its ingredient list, though, with sodium tallowate listed near the top. Sodium tallowate contains a high amount of fat, which could clog pores and make breakouts worse.

The brand also recommends this as "gentle enough for children," but it contains some fragrance. While this it isn't in a large amount, and is rinsed off, fragrance is not the best for those with sensitive skin (which includes children, whose skin is still developing). There's also the issue that this contains sodium cocoate, which can be drying and irritating to skin.

Overall, this is a lackluster option, and one we don't recommend. You can find much better options on our list of Best Cleansers.

Pros:
  • Contains some gentle cleansing ingredients.
Cons:
  • Contains sodium tallowate, which could be a problem for breakouts.
  • Contains a small amount of fragrance, which could be an issue for sensitive skin.
  • Contains the potentially drying and irritating ingredient sodium cocoate.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: Yes

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar is gentle enough to use daily but effective at cleaning and soothing your skin. It's your skin's constant companion in the shower or in the tub.

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
