Brand Overview

Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick delivers on its promises to give the look of "just-blotted lipstick" while allowing your natural lip color to show through. You get a pick-me-up of sheer matte color that feels comfortably-smooth—a very nice alternative to the heavier, relatively drying matte lipsticks you may have experienced in the past.

Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick has a non-slick feel that hugs lips as it's applied and sets to a soft matte finish. Though not totally transfer-proof, it adheres to lips and stays put reasonably well without feathering into lines around the mouth.

For the more vibrant/pigmented shades, such as the bright red "Zip", the color leaves a stain that may fade unevenly, so you'll want to keep an eye out for touch ups. You also have the option of more subtle shades, such as the peachy-nude "Cake", which imparts just a light wash of color for worry-free wear. Other shades include tones of pink, berry, magenta and brown in varying intensities of the diffused matte finish.

Formula-wise, kudos to Glossier for keeping this lipstick fragrance-free. They also included some beneficial antioxidants, albeit in minimal concentration (but hey, some is better than none).

Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick really does bring a new twist to traditional matte lipstick and looks great while doing so. Well done, Glossier.

Pros:
  • Sheer matte color feels comfortably-smooth.
  • Adheres to lips, resisting feathering into lines around the mouth.
  • Variety of shades including tones of red, peachy-nude, pink, berry, magenta and brown.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • None.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No
Generation G is a new kind of lip color that gives the look and finish of just-blotted lipstick, without the blot. Theyre lipsticks that adapt to you, not the other way around, so they'll appear a bit different on everyone as your natural lip color shows through. The effect? Diffused, matte goodnessjust swipe it on.

Glossier At-A-Glance

Glossier is the brainchild of Emily Weiss, whose successful beauty blog IntoTheGloss.com inspired the spinoff skincare/makeup line launched in 2014. Weiss describes the concept behind Glossier as a lifestyle beauty brand with a highly edited selection of streamlined skincare and makeup products.

We consider Glossiers makeup the strong suit of the brand. Their tagline of uncomplicated makeup staples that live with younot on you rings true with their simple yet impressive lineup of color products. Each is intentionally designed as a low maintenance option to enhance your appearance but not overpower it, allowing your natural beauty to shine through. By and large, the makeup products perform well, and while the shade options arent vast, were impressed by the flattering, attractive colors that theyve curated.

Glossiers skincare fares a little lower on the rating scale. While the majority of formulas are decent, they tend to be lackluster in terms of a well-researched cocktail of beneficial ingredients. Not bad, but not great either. Aesthetically-speaking, the skincare products stick to their reoccurring promise of dewy, glowy looking skin.

Were happy to report the majority of Glossiers skincare and makeup products are fragrance free, which is a rarity in the cosmetics industry and better overall for the health of your skin. (There a few products featuring rosewatersee individual reviews for our thoughts on that.)

To sum it up: Skincare-wise theres room for improvement, but if you like the minimalist approach and cool girl vibe, Glossier makeup delivers. Were intrigued to see what they come up with next!
