Brand Overview

If you're attracted to nude lip colors feast your eyes on Gen Nude Buttercream Lip Gloss! With an abundance of pinkish-nude, muted mauve, dusty rose, peachy-beige, almond and other neutral hues, there's a nude color for just about everyone in this collection. Better yet, the plush velvety texture feels so cushiony smooth, it will have you reaching for more, even if you don't actually need to touchup yet.

In addition, Gen Nude Buttercream Lipgloss features an enriching blend of nourishing fatty acids to help keep lips supple and smooth. The plush (but not goopy or tacky) texture seals moisture in while safeguarding lips from the drying effects of harsh environmental conditions.

As for the claims that this gloss is, "formulated with plumping ingredients for fullness without the tingle," we contacted the brand to find out which ingredients they were referring to. We haven't received a reply yet, but our analysis of the ingredient list and user experience proved this claim to be an exaggeration—there is no visible plumping action. On the plus side, that's actually a good thing since lip-plumping cosmetics tend to aggravate skin and break down vital substances in lips.

Pigment-wise, you can expect somewhere between semi-sheer to medium coverage depending on which shade you choose and how much you layer it on. Each has a moderately glossy shine, and a few of the shades have a light hint of sparkle.

Between this gloss' heavenly texture, beneficial formula, and gorgeous array of nude shades, it's a home run for any neutral lip lover!

FYI: Despite the prominence of flavor on the ingredient list, we found this lip gloss to be only lightly flavored with a subtle (hardly detectable) vanilla scent.

  • Gorgeous and plentiful array of nude shades for just about every skin tone.
  • Velvety gloss texture feels cushiony smooth (not goopy or sticky) for the duration of wear.
  • Beneficial blend, including nourishing fatty acids to keep lips supple and smooth.
  • Plush consistency helps seal moisture in.
  • None.

Bare Escentuals At-a-Glance

Makeup is what this San Francisco-based cosmetics line is primarily about, and they use the pure and natural marketing angle to entice consumers. Founded in 1976 by Diane Ranger, who left the company in the early '90s Bare Escentuals was one of the first brands to introduce the concept of loose powder foundation. Since then, they have moved beyond it to include liquid foundations and tinted moisturizers and an ever expanding line of color cosmetics as well as skincare products.

The products are sold in most Sephora boutiques and Ulta stores, though the full selection of skincare products is most often found at the Bare Escentuals freestanding stores scattered throughout the United States.

We should note that loose powder makeup does take some practice to get the hang of, yet there is no denying that this type of foundation has its fan base. There is a lot to love about Bare Escentuals, even if mineral makeup isn't your thing (especially their price ranges, which have remained affordable in comparison to many of their neighbors at Sephora).

Strengths: Good makeup removers; a few well-formulated powders with SPF; some nice eyeshadows and impressive mascaras; some impressive foundations; several elegant brush options; not too expensive.

Weaknesses: Some of the loose powder products have texture and finish concerns; some of the skincare contain potentially problematic ingredients.
