Future Dew Oil Serum Hybrid
Glossier claims Future Dew Oil Serum Hybrid is a, “shortcut to the way your skin looks after a full skincare routine—dewy, glowing, cared-for—in one long-wearing product.” The long-term effects aren’t ironclad, but it’s true that this delivers instant (temporary) radiance.
Housed in a frosted glass bottle and dispensed via pump, Future Dew is as a fluid serum with a lightly sticky consistency that glides on smoothy without being so runny that it drips all over the place. The pinky-peach hue sheers out as it’s blended over skin, leaving a holographic sheen that accentuates with shine (no glitter or shimmer particles).
In our experience, the cosmetic effect dissipates more quickly than the 12 hours that Glossier promises, but it at least kept skin “gleamy” for a few of hours before fading. If you’re applying makeup over it, that may camouflage the dewy shine depending on what kind of foundation you use.
We have to point out that Glossier’s recommendation to apply this as your last skin care step goes against best practice: your sunscreen should always be your last skin care step to ensure non-diluted protection.
Formula wise, you’ll find replenishing glycerin and squalane front and center, followed by a generous blend of non-fragrant plant oils that provide antioxidants and soothing moisture. True to claim, the Evodia rutaecarpa fruit extract has the potential to provide some amount of tone improvement for skin. Sodium hyaluronate (a derivative of hyaluronic acid) is also on hand for hydration.
On the flipside, the inclusion of fragrant rosemary oil is a step in the wrong direction. The volatile reaction that it’s capable of causing can lead to sensitizing effects for skin. Here the rosemary oil isn’t in high concentration and the scent dissipates, so we’re not overly concerned, but still fragrance free is a much safer way to go (especially if you have sensitive skin).
Last but not least, we must mention that the frosted bottle may allow some amount of light exposure, which can compromise the formula’s delicate ingredients. That in and of itself is not a deal breaker—but we’d suggest storing this in a dark place dark (such as a closed drawer) to help preserve the stability of the formula.
- Delivers a holographic sheen that accentuates skin.
- Provides dewy hydration.
- Contains skin-replenishing ingredients + antioxidant-rich plant extract/oils.
- The fragrant rosemary oil poses a risk of irritation for skin.
- Ignore directions to use this as your last skin care step—sunscreen should be your final skin care step each morning to ensure non-diluted protection.
- Frosted bottle needs to be stored away from direct light to protect sensitive ingredients.
A shortcut to the way your skin looks after a full skincare routine—dewy, glowing, cared-for—in one long-wearing product. Nourishing oils (that don’t feel greasy) immediately give you a gleamy, well-moisturized look that lasts up to 12 hours. Powerful plant-based extracts work to make your skin look brighter, instantly and over time.
Glossier is the brainchild of Emily Weiss, whose successful beauty blog IntoTheGloss.com inspired the spinoff skin care/makeup line launched in 2014. Weiss describes the concept behind Glossier as a lifestyle beauty brand with a highly edited selection of streamlined skin care and makeup products.
We consider Glossier's makeup the strong suit of the brand. Their tagline of uncomplicated makeup staples that live with you, not on you, rings true with their simple yet impressive lineup of color products. Each is intentionally designed as a low maintenance option to enhance your appearance but not overpower it, allowing your natural beauty to shine through. By and large, the makeup products perform well, and while the shade options aren't vast, we're impressed by the flattering, attractive colors they've curated.
Glossier's skin care fares a little lower on the rating scale. While the majority of formulas are decent, they tend to be lackluster in terms of a well-researched cocktail of beneficial ingredients. Not bad, but not great either. Aesthetically-speaking, the skincare products stick to their reoccurring promise of dewy, glowy looking skin.
We're happy to report the majority of Glossier's skin care and makeup products are fragrance free, which is a rarity in the cosmetics industry and better overall for the health of your skin.
To sum it up: Skin care-wise there's room for improvement, but if you like the minimalist approach and cool girl vibe, Glossier makeup delivers. We're intrigued to see what they come up with next!
