Brand Overview

If you want thicker, fuller-looking, more dramatic brows, NYX Cosmetics’ Fill & Fluff Pomade Pencil is highly recommended!

This retractable pencil comes with a unique “micro paddle brush” on the opposite end, and its job is to soften and help blend the pencil color. You’ll need to use it because the creamy pencil deposits quite a bit of color even when using light pressure.

The pencil is wider than most and angled, but even when used at its point (vs. applying from the wide side), it’s impossible to create thin, feather-like strokes between brow hairs. But that’s not what this pencil is about; the brand makes it clear this is for creating the “boy brow”, which means fuller, thicker brows.

Although the pencil is creamy, it stays in place quite well, adding color and definition to brows without making them feel stiff, look matted, or overdone. Of course, you can overdo it with this brow pencil but even if you go too far, the paddle brush can come to your rescue.

The bristles on the paddle brush are amazingly soft and flexible but also densely packed. This lets you diffuse the color for a softer yet still defined look and it also does a great job grooming brow hairs so that even the strays fall into place more easily (note though that for extra-stubborn brows you’ll likely want to follow with a brow gel).

NYX offers 8 shades, including options for blonde and auburn brows and multiple options for brunette brows. All of them are workable but be aware they go on darker than usual, so you might need to purchase one shade lighter; for example, our reviewer has medium brown brows but found Brunette too dark but Taupe was just right.

  • Great option for easily creating fuller, thicker-looking brows.
  • The micro paddle-brush does a fantastic job softening and blending the results.
  • Impressive shade range.
  • Doesn’t make brows feel stiff or look matted.
  • Fragrance free.
  • Pencil texture and width makes it impossible to draw feather-like strokes between hairs.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
