Brand Overview

Vaseline’s Extremely Dry Skin Rescue is a good body lotion for skin that’s parched but doesn’t quite rank among the best options when it comes to alleviating intense dryness.

Housed in a large, opaque squeeze tube (good news for protecting its ingredients from breaking down because of light or air exposure), this fragrance-free lotion is easily spreadable. It absorbs quickly too, leaving skin feeling instantly hydrated, though it’s not quite a powerhouse formula (hydration is all you’ll get here, no other beneficial ingredients are included).

The gentle formula contains proven hydrating ingredients including glycerin, stearic acid, mineral oil, and petrolatum. But Vaseline claims this moisturizer has a unique barrier repair complex that delivers clinical strength moisturization, and there just isn’t enough in here to do that. We’d prefer to see more skin-replenishing and skin-restoring ingredients, like ceramides or cholesterol, which would better support the brand’s barrier repair claims.

If you’re looking for gentle, long-lasting hydration, this isn’t a bad option, especially considering this lotion’s size and price. If your skin is intensely dry though, you’ll find more robust options on our list of best body lotions.

Pros:
  • Contains a good complement of hydrating ingredients.
  • Packaged to protect its beneficial ingredients from light and air.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Formula is lackluster considering this product’s claims.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: Yes

The Vaseline brand is perhaps among the oldest and most well-known around the world. Since the advent of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly in the late 1800s, the brand has been synonymous with treating dry, chafed, cracked skin. Although petroleum jelly is among the best ingredients for preventing moisture loss and healing dry skin, it must be said that skin requires more than one ingredient to look and function at its healthy best. To that end, Vaseline has branched out from its original, ointment-like petroleum jelly to a line of body creams and lotions that contain a range of helpful ingredients for dry skin. Their body-care formulas aren't the most exciting around, but there are some good options. Adding to the handful of commendable products are Vaseline's widespread availability and relatively low price point.

This is definitely a line to shop carefully, because many of the body lotion formulas arent all that great; in fact, most of them pale in comparison to competing brands sold at the drugstore. Despite Vaselines history, theyre not consistently keeping pace with what modern research has shown is necessary to significantly improve dry skin. If you focus on their best products, you can find some bona-fide beauty bargains but again, this isnt a line to shop blindly.
