Brand Overview

Dove’s Exfoliating Body Polish Pomegranate Seeds and Shea Butter has a decadent texture that dry skin will appreciate, but its fragranced formula won’t do skin any favors.

This is one very esthetically-appealing body scrub. Its light, whipped texture feels creamy and when mixed with water, it produces a skin-softening lather. The exfoliating particles (hydrated silica) gently polish skin, and it rinses easily.

Unfortunately, the positives end there, as this is one strongly-scented scrub, and the scent can linger on skin after you rinse, which poses a risk of irritating skin.

We’re also somewhat concerned about the wide-mouthed jar packaging. This kind of packaging can be an issue with some formulas because good antioxidants break down in the presence of air and light. With this type of product, however, that’s not really an issue… it’s more of a messiness and hygiene issue. If you use this scrub in the shower (as most people do), it’s hard to avoid getting water in this large, cumbersome jar.

What a shame that this scrub has such drawbacks, because it’s otherwise relatively gentle for skin from the neck down. As it is, you’re better off using a leave-on AHA or BHA body lotion because those can improve skin in ways a body scrub cannot.

  • Whipped texture produces a rich, creamy lather.
  • Gently polishes and refines dry, rough skin.
  • Rinses easily.
  • Highly fragrant formula poses a risk of irritation.
  • Contains more fragrance than namesake macadamia or rice.
  • Jar packaging presents a hygiene risk and is messy to use in the shower.

Made with ¼ moisturizing cream, this body polishing scrub restores skin’s nutrients, deeply nourishing as it exfoliates. Buffing away dull, dry skin on the surface, it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. And with a rich, whipped texture, this Dove body polish gives you beautifully creamy coverage, releasing the sweet scent of pomegranate as you massage it in. Get all the effectiveness you’d look for in a body scrub, but with the nourishment your skin needs to stay its beautiful, radiant best.

Dove At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; available in every major drugstore and mass-market store; some very good body washes.

Weaknesses: The Beauty Bars are not as bad as true soaps, but all bar cleansers present problems for skin.

From its beginnings in the 1940s with its still-available original Beauty Bar, Dove has expanded and the curiously curtailed its selection of skin-care products to the point where their facial care offerings are back to nothing more than bar cleansers.

Although their Beauty Bars have their share of problems (such as containing drying ingredients and not rinsing well), they're better than traditional bar soap. However, if you can get past your propensity for bar cleansers, neighboring lines at the drugstore offer better, gentler, water soluble cleansers (the kind Dove has offered in the past).

Where Dove holds sway at the drugstore is with its vast selection of body washes. Although the formulas often differ only by fragrance, for the most part they are excellent, affordable options, especially for normal to dry skin. The body washes in their men's line aren't quite as elegant as those in the main line, and guys should know their skin will do just fine with Dove's regular body washes.

Note: All Dove products contain fragrance unless otherwise noted.
