Brand Overview

Dove’s Exfoliating Body Polish Kiwi Seeds and Cool Aloe has some wonderful traits for your skin, but one major formulary problem that won’t make your skin happy.

Esthetically, this is a great body scrub, and mostly interchangeable with Dove’s other jar-packaged scrubs. Its whipped texture feels light yet decadently creamy, mixing with water to create a skin-softening lather. The exfoliating granules (hydrated silica) gently polish and refine skin, and this scrub rinses easily. And it almost goes without saying but the price is surprisingly low for what you get.

The problem? Fragrance! This is one strongly-scented scrub, and the scent can linger on skin after you rinse. If fragrance were great for skin, this would be win-win, but what makes your nose happy isn’t doing the same for your skin. Fragrance poses a risk of irritating skin.

A lesser concern is the wide-mouthed jar packaging. We’re not concerned about light- and air-sensitive ingredients breaking down; rather, it’s a messiness and hygiene issue. It’s not easy to keep water out of this scrub when you use it in the shower, not to mention the cumbersome nature of large jars.

Ultimately, this scrub presents too big a trade-off to make it worth purchasing. And do keep in mind that a leave-on AHA or BHA body lotion can improve skin in ways a body scrub cannot.

Pros:
  • Whipped texture produces a rich, creamy lather.
  • Gently polishes and refines dry, rough skin.
  • Rinses easily.
  • Inexpensive.
Cons:
  • Highly fragrant formula poses a risk of irritation.
  • Contains more fragrance than namesake macadamia or rice.
  • Jar packaging presents a hygiene risk and is messy to use in the shower.

Enriched with our classic ¼ moisturizing cream, it deeply nourishes and cares for your skin as it exfoliates, buffing away dull, dry skin. Restore your skin’s natural nutrients as you massage the polish in, and experience a burst of fresh kiwi fragrance that lifts your senses, leaving you refreshed and soothed. When you’re looking for beautiful skin, there’s not much more you need than that.

Dove At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; available in every major drugstore and mass-market store; some very good body washes.

Weaknesses: The Beauty Bars are not as bad as true soaps, but all bar cleansers present problems for skin.

From its beginnings in the 1940s with its still-available original Beauty Bar, Dove has expanded and the curiously curtailed its selection of skin-care products to the point where their facial care offerings are back to nothing more than bar cleansers.

Although their Beauty Bars have their share of problems (such as containing drying ingredients and not rinsing well), they're better than traditional bar soap. However, if you can get past your propensity for bar cleansers, neighboring lines at the drugstore offer better, gentler, water soluble cleansers (the kind Dove has offered in the past).

Where Dove holds sway at the drugstore is with its vast selection of body washes. Although the formulas often differ only by fragrance, for the most part they are excellent, affordable options, especially for normal to dry skin. The body washes in their men's line aren't quite as elegant as those in the main line, and guys should know their skin will do just fine with Dove's regular body washes.

Note: All Dove products contain fragrance unless otherwise noted.
