Brand Overview

This liquid-to-foam self-tanner is suitable for all skin types. Its nearly weightless texture is easy to apply and, true to claim, this dries quickly. In terms of changing skin color, it contains the same ingredient (dihydroxyacetone) found in most self-tanners, be they liquids, gels, or lotions. This also contains the self-tanning ingredient erythrulose, which works slower than dihydroxyacetone for prolonged color.

It's nice that this contains antioxidants and skin-repairing phospholipids, but would be better without the fragrant narcissus bulb extract and inclusion of fragrance itself. Although you can find less expensive self-tanners that do the job just as well, this is worth trying if the price doesn't dissuade you.

  • Easy to apply.
  • Doesn't feel heavy or slick on skin.
  • Dries fast.
  • On the pricey side given its somewhat basic formula.
  • Contains a fragrant plant extract that poses a slight risk of irritation.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

The lightweight, oil-free, mess-free sunless tanning foam applies easily and dries quickly. The effective dual-active formula ensures even, natural-looking color without exposure to the harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Rodan + Fields At-A-Glance

Many of you are probably familiar with physicians Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields from their appearances on infomercials about their successful ProActiv line of anti-acne skincare products. The Rodan + Fields approaches are advertised for those suffering from a variety of skin conditions, and are claimed to work for anti-aging, skin discolorations, sensitive skin, and acne.

Most consumers want simplicity when it comes to making decisions about what skincare products they should use. The Rodan + Fields marketing strategy is to make it simple. They eliminate the confusion about what products work together by creating streamlined, prepackaged product groups, each aimed at specific skin-care concerns. Each product group is enclosed in a clever, take-along parcel that is the skin-care equivalent of a sack lunch. (Products are also available separately for those who want to customize their routine or add products outside the predetermined routines.) This structured approach has merit, but, each routine has at least one questionable or lackluster formulation, or a problem with packaging.
