Epic Ink Lip Dye
NYX often makes great budget-friendly makeup products; but Epic Ink Lip Dye isn't one of them. The application instructions allude to all its potential problems. When you're directed to moisturize, then line your lips, then apply the lip dye, you may wonder if it'll tend to bleed and feather, cling unevenly to dry areas, and settle into every lip line. In this case, every one of those assumptions is accurate.
The one potentially positive aspect of this product, its truly weightless texture, turns out to be a problem in the end: since it feels like you're wearing nothing, you may forget to check to see if you need to reapply. The color isn't particularly long-lasting, so when you eventually do look in the mirror, you'll find the outer edges of your lips still stained, and the rest either bare or patchy, depending on your lips' texture. Given the dye's thin, watery texture, most people will need to wear a liner to get a precise application—but that just makes the outer edges of your lips more pronounced. The dye clings there, but wears off everyplace else.
It's hard to imagine this lip dye as anyone's go-to product, except in the first ten minutes of wear.
- The formula feels weightless.
- Thin, watery texture makes precise application difficult.
- Wears unevenly, leaving lips looking patchy and dry.
- Settles into every line and/or dry area on your lips.
- Despite its claims, this dye has a short wear time.
This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.
It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
