Enhanced Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15
Alpha Skin Care's Enhanced Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 earns its broad-spectrum designation due to the in-part zinc oxide formula, but unfortunately, SPF 15 is on the low side for what most dermatologists around the world recommend as the standard of adequate protection. (Shoot for SPF 30 or higher; see More Info to learn why.)
But there's a larger concern—the peroxidized corn oil raises a red flag because oxidizing an oil can lead to free-radical damage due to generation of unstable compounds (FEBS Letter, November 1994). It also could hinder the effectiveness of the handful of antioxidants that this formula contains.
Enhanced Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15's lightweight, creamy lotion texture works for all but extremely dry or oily skin and the absence of fragrance is a plus. However, considering you can get that from other SPF-enhanced moisturizers that have more to offer without this one's formulary snafus, why bother? See those options on our Best Moisturizers with Sunscreen list.
- Lightweight, fragrance-free formula.
- Offers broad-spectrum sun protection.
- SPF 15 is below the minimum recommended standard for adequate protection.
- Peroxidized corn oil poses a risk of free-radical damage.
While this sunscreen will provide the SPF number on the label and has UVA-protecting ingredients, no sunscreen with an SPF lower than 20 will rate higher than two stars in Beautypedia. For more information on our criteria for rating sunscreens, please visit the Best Sunscreens section of the site.
Applying an SPF 15-rated sunscreen under a foundation, tinted moisturizer, or BB cream that also offers broad-spectrum protection will take far better care of your skin. This layering approach ensures your skin gets sufficient sun protection even if you're not applying liberally.
Hydration and sun protection for healthy, radiant skin. For all skin types.
Known primarily for their well-formulated AHA products, Alpha Skin Care (formerly Alpha Hydrox) recently got an impressive image update. Along with a new name, they've also revamped their products. Although the improvements were more visual and packaging-related than formulary-driven, the fact remains that Alpha Skin Care has a formidable range of effective AHA products, all with definitively researched glycolic acid. Kudos to the company for continuing to be direct about the AHA content (and pH) of their exfoliants, something most other lines selling AHA products prefer to keep a mystery.
Should the folks behind this brand choose to go back to the drawing board once again, they would do well to reconsider their current jar packaging if they intend to keep adding antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to their efficacious but still predominantly basic products. Until then, you can rely on Alpha Skin Care for supplying AHA products that really work, and a few other surprises too, all affordably priced and readily available.
