Eczema Relief Instant Therapy Creme
With one exception that earned this treatment cream our lowest rating, this eczema treatment cream has a lot of good things going for it, not the least of which is its fragrance-free formula. Plenty of tried-and-true emollients and reliable mineral oil are on hand for protective relief from dry, itchy skin, and this contains some barrier repairing ingredients and a proven anti-irritant, too.
So why the POOR rating? The cooling sensation Eucerin mentions on the box for this cream is menthoxypropanediol, a menthol-derived ingredient that's more potent (read: More irritating) than menthol itself. An ingredient like this functions as a counter-irritant. Counter-irritants are used to induce local inflammation for the purpose of relieving inflammation (such as itching from eczema) in deeper or adjacent tissues. In other words, they substitute one kind of inflammation for another, which is never good for skin.
Irritation or inflammation, no matter what causes it or how it happens, impairs the skin's immune and healing response (Source: Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology, November–December 2000, pages 358–371). And although your skin may not show it or doesn't react in an irritated fashion, if you apply irritants to your skin the damage is still taking place and is ongoing, so it adds up over time (Source: Skin Research and Technology, November 2001, pages 227–237). This ingredient's irritancy will calm the itching associated with eczema, but in the long run isn't preferred to many other rich moisturizers, including others from Eucerin.
- Rich, creamy texture is loaded with replenishing and smoothing ingredients.
- Contains repairing ingredients and a proven anti-irritant.
- Stops itching due to eczema.
- Menthoxypropanediol is a strong skin irritant.
Clinically proven immediate and long-lasting relief of itchy, dry, irritated skin due to eczema.
Strengths: Inexpensive and widely distributed; fragrance-free cleansers; some good body washes and body moisturizers; widely available.
Weaknesses: Anti-redness products that added questionable ingredients instead of increasing the anti-inflammatory agents; nothing for acne-prone skin; jar packaging; some standard body lotions that are OK for dry skin but "OK" isn't good enough.
This drugstore staple line claims to be dermatologist-preferred skin care, but any dermatologist who recommends this line in its entirety without reservation needs a crash course in what skin really needs to be protected and look its best.
There are some basic products that a dermatologist would want to consider, but Eucerin falls short in products to address acne. Further, their latest facial skincare products aren't keeping pace with what industry frontrunners are doing in an effort to create elegant, effective products. For example, serums from Olay, Neutrogena, and Aveeno have much more interesting formulations, while moisturizers from many other drugstore lines (including Nivea, which is owned by Eucerin parent company Beiersdorf) include a greater complement of antioxidants and ingredients that mimic the structure and function of healthy skin. Eucerin is making some strides here, though, which is an encouraging sign.
A major pro for this line is that all of the products are fragrance-free. Although that's helpful for all skin types, it certainly isn't compelling enough for dermatologists to green-light this line without cautions about which products to avoid.
