Brand Overview

Olay's Duo Dual-Sided Body Cleanser's advertising pronounces that it's a "never before seen" product that is a breakthrough cleanser. Is it really that unique? The answer is not really but it is a clever concept.

This is essentially a bath sponge with a semi-solid cleanser inside that foams when it comes in contact with water. One side is smooth and cloth-like, while the other is a textured plastic designed to provide manual exfoliation.

While this product might be new for Olay, it's not the first of its kind. The semi-solid cleanser portion is pretty basic (it contains standard cleansing ingredients), though it does a good enough job of getting skin clean without drying it out.

The soft side of the cleansing sponge is gentle and smooths the cleanser over skin without abrading it, but the "exfoliating" side is another issue altogether. We would only recommend using it on the bottom of your feet, as it's too harsh to use on skin anywhere on your body and especially not on your face!

Another issue is that this contains a strong orchid and black currant fragrance that lingers. Though this is rinsed off skin, daily use of highly fragrant products can lead to skin irritation (which we explain in the More Info section).

While the concept of this body wash might seem interesting, ultimately it's a pass. You'll find much gentler options on our list of Best Body Washes.

  • Contains gentle cleansers.
  • Smooth side is effective at spreading cleanser without being harsh.
  • Exfoliating side is too harsh to use on the face and most of the body.
  • Contains a strong fragrance, which can irritate skin.

Why Fragrance Is a Problem for Skin: Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes a chronic sensitizing reaction on skin.

This reaction in turn leads to all kinds of problems, including disrupting skin's barrier, worsening dryness, increasing or triggering redness, depleting vital substances in skin's surface, and generally preventing skin from looking healthy, smooth, and hydrated. Fragrance free is always the best way to go for all skin types.

A surprising fact: Even though you can't always see or feel the negative effects of fragrant ingredients on skin, the damage will still be taking place, even if it's not evident on the surface. Research has demonstrated that you don't need to see or feel the effects of irritation for your skin to be suffering. Much like the effects from cumulative sun damage, the negative impact and the visible damage from fragrance may not become apparent for a long time.

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
