Dr. Carver’s Magnanimous Post Shave All-in-One Moisturizer
Note June 2016: Dr. Carver's Magnanimous Post Shave All-in-One Moisturizer is no longer available. Magnanimous Post Shave Cream is the replacement product and it comes in different packaging and has a different ingredient list (with added fragrance) and is NOT the same product as the one being reviewed here. We have not tired the new product yet, but Dollar Shave Club has the full ingredient list available for all products on their website under their FAQ. Buyer beware!
Generous is an appropriate synonym for the "magnanimous" in Dr. Carver's Magnanimous Post Shave.
All-in-One Moisturizer, as it is amply sized, named and loaded with beneficial ingredients. Housed in a plastic squeeze bottle, this light cream is best for normal to dry skin (it may be tricky for the acne prone because of the thickeners it contains). It's also fragrance free, making it suitable for the sensitive skin types among us, too!
First, let's take a look at the moisturizing ingredients: safflower seed oil, fatty acids and shea butter top the list, which is an ideal blend for smoothing dry, flaky spots without feeling greasy or heavy. The skin reparatives sodium hyaluronate and squalane make an appearance, too, which aid in keeping skin healthy.
Dollar Shave Club thought to add anti-irritants, such as barley and oat, as well as antioxidants like vitamins E, A and C. You'll find a variant of cactus known as the prickly pear (Opuntia streptacantha stem extract) that has some research demonstrating its anti-inflammatory effects (Archives of Pharmacal Research, 1998 & Fitoterapia, 2001).
As if more could be packed into this formula, it also contains the alpha hydroxy acid glycolic acid at a pH level (4.0-4.5) to function as a mild exfoliant. We suspect the amount of glycolic acid is present at a level too low to work as a standalone exfoliant in treating concerns like sun damage or signs of aging—that's actually a good thing, as AHA over freshly shaven skin could sting, and that's certainly not the experience anyone wants from their moisturizer.
Dr. Carver's Magnanimous Post Shave All-in-One Moisturizer is a very good nighttime option to consider, (whether you're a man or woman). If used during the daytime, keep in mind you'll need to follow with your favorite broad-spectrum moisturizer rated SPF 30+. Did we mention the price? At the time of this review, it's just under $10 for 3.4 ounces of product. Magnanimous, indeed.
- Contains moisturizing ingredients ideal for normal to dry skin.
- Includes antioxidants, skin reparatives and anti-irritants.
- Fragrance free.
- Generously sized and inexpensive.
Dollar Shave Club At-A-Glance
Strengths: Generously sized products; inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free formulas; excellent serum and nighttime moisturizer; products are packaged to protect their ingredients from air and light exposure.
Weaknesses: Fragranced shave gel; you cant build a complete skincare routine (yet) from the brands few products.
Venice, California-based Dollar Shave Club opened their internet doors in 2011, with their goal to provide lower-priced alternatives to the razors sold by large brands (think Gillette or Shick). If youre one to visit YouTube, youve very likely seen their inaugural video ad that went viral in which CEO Mike Dubin introduced the brands mission statement, Our Blades Are F***ing Great.
Fast forward a few years, and the independent Dollar Shave Club brand has expanded into the mens skincare market with a few products that many have asked us about. (According to their website, they plan to release more in 2015.) Although there are only three skincare products at the time this review was writtena shave gel, a serum and moisturizerwhats there is mostly very good and in a refreshing change of pace, above average for mens grooming products!
The brands approach to sales is an interesting one. Dollar Shave Club is a monthly, mail-order service and once you sign up, you choose your first kit that includes your razor of preference and any of the brands grooming products. Then, you can edit your monthly kit anytime, removing or adding products as you prefer. Dollar Shave Club will email you a week prior to its shipment, allowing you to change (or cancel) your order. Only club members can purchase individual products at this time.
While there is no commitment to a monthly order (good), the caveat is that this experience doesnt provide the shop anytime convenience of running down to your local Target or department store (not as good for some).
Interesting products aside, Dollar Shave Club has a sense of humor (evident in their YouTube videos), and is clearly committed to extending this throughout the customer experience. Each order includes a monthly newsletter of brand updates, jokes, member stories and moreall written with a wry and entertaining voice.
You may be curious about the Dr. Carvers moniker emblazoned on each of the brands products. Just to be clear, there is no Dr. Carver behind the brandthis is a fictitious character created by Dollar Shave Club (theres that sense of humor again).
SO, is Dollar Shave Club worth checking out? If the mail-order only approach isnt a bother to you, the products are good and the prices are surprisingly affordable for what you get. We look forward to seeing what Dollar Shave Club does next!
