Brand Overview

Estee Lauder is on a roll with their longstanding Double Wear collection! We were truly impressed by Double Wear Stay-in-Place Matte Powder Foundation, a fragrance-free pressed powder with medium to nearly-full coverage that’s suitable for all skin types.

The standard compact component has a “hollow” bottom reservoir that holds a dual-sided sponge applicator. The sponge side provides nearly full coverage, while the “velvet” side provides medium coverage. You also have the option of using either side of the applicator dampened, which delivers sheer coverage.

Damp application does work for sheer to light coverage, but you need to be very careful blending, or it can look streaky. As for the dual-sided sponge, we didn’t notice a huge difference between the two; however, if you prefer more coverage, we give the edge to the sponge side, used dry.

No matter which application method you choose you’ll get surprisingly natural-looking results. Dry application is best for making skin look remarkably smooth, even, and perfected, and the soft matte finish holds up quite well, although moderately to very oily areas will see shine peek through within an hour.

Despite the slight disappointment if you’re expecting all-day shine control, this does wear for hours without changing color (the pigments don’t oxidize) or making skin look drab, even when you reapply.

Turning to the shades, you’ll find a dizzying array of over 40 options, including colors for the lightest skin tones. The light-to-medium tones are well represented as usual, and although there are plenty of dark shades, the darkest options still leave some deeper skin tones out. Still, there’s no denying that it’s an impressive range for a powder foundation; we just wish they had gone a little bit further to round out the selection, especially because the darker shades don’t look ashen and we would’ve loved to see even darker shades follow suit.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
