Brand Overview

Bobbi Brown says its Double Lining Eyeshadow is a key part of creating one of makeup artist Brown's signature looks (the "double lining" technique). So, is it going to change the way you apply your eyeshadow? Probably not, but aside from a couple of flaws, these powder shadows have a lot going for them!

Double Lining Eyeshadows are packaged in a small, black compact with a see-through window on the lid. It's the same packaging as the brand's other powder eyeshadows, and doesn't have "Double Lining" written anywhere on the compact or the box it comes in. So what's the difference between these shadows and Brown's other offerings? We checked with the brand, and they're the same formula as their standard eyeshadows—the only exception is that the "double lining" shades are the darkest colors offered (such as deep brown, navy, and black) that are recommended for use when wet as eyeliner on Bobbi Brown's website.

This isn't exactly a unique concept, as many powder eyeshadows can be used wet as liner to great effect! The "double lining" technique consists of first using the powder eyeshadow to line the lash line, then going over that with the brand's Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. This is supposed to create extra dimension, though the effect is not much different than if you lined with the gel liner on its own. Double Lining Eyeshadow works well in this way, though, mainly because the gel liner applied over it acts as a sealant.

When used on its own as a liner, this shadow has rich color and applies smoothly, and wears throughout a standard workday without smudging. It does, flake, however —we noticed specks of this shadow on our cheeks about three hours into its wear time, making it less than ideal for just lining eyes on its own. In that sense, it becomes double duty because you have to use a product like Brown's gel eyeliner to keep this shadow from flaking.

Used as a dry shadow, the formula performs well, with a texture that's soft but not overly powdery, and it's loaded with pigment. A little goes a long way, so you don't need much to get a lot of color, and they blend easily. These shadows (which are all matte) also wear well without smudging or creasing, though they do start to fade a bit towards the end of their wear time, which is about seven hours.

Overall, Double Lining Eyeshadow is a good option, with a lot to offer as a dry shadow and when used underneath a gel eyeliner. As a liner on its own, there are better options, but if you do want to check these out, you can certainly get creative and enjoy a more dramatic eye design!

Pros:
  • When used wet as a liner, applies smoothly with rich color.
  • As a liner, doesn't smudge.
  • When used dry as eyeshadow, blends easily and wears without smudging or creasing.
Cons:
  • When used as a liner on its own, the shades can flake.
  • When used dry as a shadow, they can fade towards the end of their wear time.

Bobbi Brown At-A-Glance

Strengths: A good cleanser and eye makeup removers; some impressive foundations, with options for all skin types and preferences; very good blushes and eyeshadows (powder and cream); several top-notch mascaras; mostly excellent brushes.

Weaknesses: Multiple moisturizers in jar packaging, otherwise great products hindered with irritating fragrant oils or fragrance components.

It all began with lipsticks. In 1991, New York based makeup artist Bobbi Brown debuted a collection of ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman, expecting to sell about one hundred units in a month. She sold more than that the first day. From there, it's been mostly success after success, as Brown launched her classic foundation stick, wrote her first book, Bobbi Brown Beauty The Ultimate Beauty Resource, and enjoyed continued attention as an in-demand makeup artist and beauty educator.

Today, Bobbi Brown's makeup that continues to excel with superior foundations, true matte blushes and eyeshadows, and with all of the other basics that are essential to anyones makeup wardrobe. It isn't the least bit surprising that this makeup collection continues to do so well, because for many it's one-stop shopping that combines classic makeup application techniques with enough fun-yet-functional products to keep customer's interest piqued season to season.

Turning to the skincare collection, there are a few excellent formulas, but unfortunately, many are packaged in a jar, which means their beneficial ingredients are rendered useless due to air exposure (and bacterial contamination from spatulas or fingers). In addition, some suffer from the inclusion of potent fragrant essential oils. Those that should be avoided are noted in their respective reviews. That aside, color is without a doubt Bobbi Brown's strong pointbut you will find a few sleeper hits among the selection of skincare products.
