Brand Overview

Research has shown that those with diabetes have unique skin issues where certain mechanisms in skin, such as those that regulate healthy collagen production and degradation, are faulty, leading to a greater tendency for skin damage and slower healing of wounds. To that end, Gold Bond has formulated a moisturizer with a high amount of urea, an ingredient that helps bind moisture to dry skin while, in higher amounts (as is the case here) prompts dry, built-up dead skin cells to shed.

Because in high amounts can also be potentially drying (we know, ironic, huh?) it’s a good thing that Gold Bond couples it with a nice mix of repairing and emollient ingredients. Antioxidants and anti-irritants are on hand, too, though not to the same impressive degree as seen in our top-rated body lotions from Gold Bond.

What about the claim that when tested by dermatologists, 9 out of 10 people with diabetes saw their skin improve in one hour? That sounds good, but without knowing the details, it’s relatively meaningless. For example, we don’t know what these 10 people were using (if anything at all) before trying this Gold Bond product. Perhaps their previous moisturizer was inferior, or perhaps they had washed that day with bar soap, which is drying and leads to dull-looking skin. In those instances, any well formulated moisturizer would’ve resulted in the majority of participants concluding that yes, their skin does look better one hour later.

In the end, this is a good body lotion for dry skin, whether diabetes is an issue or not. If you are experiencing skin issues from diabetes, regular use of a product like this (and routine consultations with your physician) will help a lot.

Gold Bond At-A-Glance

Gold Bond is a staple at drugstores due to their small selection of body lotions, anti-itch products, and various foot-care products. Though there are a number of Gold Bond products containing the potent irritant menthol (particularly its foot care and "medicated" products), in recent years Gold Bond has taken great strides and now offers some impressive moisturizers that are fairly priced, too.
