Brand Overview

Dove's no stranger to the world of body lotions, with numerous options available. But its DermaSeries features some of the best-formulated options in its lineup, with DermaSeries Eczema Relief Soothing Body Lotion being a standout.

This lotion isn't the sexiest product out there, but it isn't intended to be: It's designed for those seeking relief from extreme dry skin. It comes in a plastic squeeze tube, and has a somewhat thick, cream texture (rather than the lotion that the name implies), but once applied, it "melts" quickly into skin without leaving any greasiness behind.

The star ingredient here is colloidal oatmeal, known for its skin-soothing properties. Also included are skin-conditioning ingredients that will help calm red, aggravated skin. Best of all, this is fragrance free, a crucial component when it comes to helping skin compromised by eczema.

This straightforward body lotion does what it says when it comes to helping moisturize and soothe very dry skin. It's not the most advanced formula in terms of replenishing lipids and antioxidants, but it's value for dry, sensitive skin earns our top rating, not to mention at this price, it won't break the bank, either.

  • Formula melts into skin without any greasy residue.
  • Contains colloidal oatmeal and skin-conditioning ingredients to soothe very dry skin.
  • Fragrance free.
  • A beauty bargain.
  • Comes up short on more elegant replenishing ingredients and antioxidants.

Dove At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; available in every major drugstore and mass-market store; some very good body washes.

Weaknesses: The Beauty Bars are not as bad as true soaps, but all bar cleansers present problems for skin.

From its beginnings in the 1940s with its still-available original Beauty Bar, Dove has expanded and the curiously curtailed its selection of skin-care products to the point where their facial care offerings are back to nothing more than bar cleansers.

Although their Beauty Bars have their share of problems (such as containing drying ingredients and not rinsing well), they're better than traditional bar soap. However, if you can get past your propensity for bar cleansers, neighboring lines at the drugstore offer better, gentler, water soluble cleansers (the kind Dove has offered in the past).

Where Dove holds sway at the drugstore is with its vast selection of body washes. Although the formulas often differ only by fragrance, for the most part they are excellent, affordable options, especially for normal to dry skin. The body washes in their men's line aren't quite as elegant as those in the main line, and guys should know their skin will do just fine with Dove's regular body washes.

Note: All Dove products contain fragrance unless otherwise noted.
