Brand Overview

Cetaphil Pro Oily Skin Oil Absorbing Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is a renaming of the brand’s Dermacontrol Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30. The ingredient list remains the same, and Cetaphil confirmed the formula did not change, only the name and claims---gone are references to soothing redness common to acne-prone skin. As such, we raise the rating owing to this product’s wonderful esthetics for oily skin, among other positives.

This fragrance-free, lightweight moisturizer with sunscreen is conveniently packaged in an opaque plastic bottled topped with a pump-style dispenser. The blend of absorbent and film-forming agents in this generously-sized facial moisturizer prevent it from being hydrating, though it does have a lightweight texture and absorbent, soft matte finish those with oily skin will appreciate, plus it wears well under makeup and won’t make skin feel dried out.

The blend of active ingredients supports the claim of  broad spectrum protection. This lacks meaningful amounts of antioxidants. Cetaphil included tiny amounts of vitamin E, a component of soothing licorice, anti-irritant allantoin, and zinc gluconate, but that's about it. Nice, but somewhat lacking.

Despite this slight disappointment, this remains one of the better daytime moisturizers for oily, breakout-prone skin thanks to its light texture, matte finish, and ability to help reduce oily shine, at least for a couple hours. We’re big fans of any SPF-rated product that doesn’t contain irritating ingredients and whose texture and finish will encourage daily use.

Note: The ingredient list in this review was obtained from Cetaphil’s website, which lists the inactive ingredients in descending order. The outer carton for the actual product lists the same inactive ingredients in alphabetical order. This is permissible because of the sunscreen’s status as an over-the-counter drug in the United States.

Pros:
  • Provides reliable broad-spectrum sun protection without feeling slick or greasy.
  • Lightweight, soft matte finish that's ideal for oily skin.
  • Wears well under makeup.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • Contains low amounts of beneficial ingredients like antioxidants and skin soothers.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: Yes

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
