Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil
Charlotte Tilbury's Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil comes in luminous, metallic hues intended to make specific eye colors pop. Some may find the recommended shade pairings helpful, but what really makes this eyeshadow pencil standout is how impressively well it wears—even on those prone to oily eyelids and creasing!
Smaller than a standard "chubby" stick but larger than an eyeliner pencil, Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil offers fast and easy application. The pencil has a gel-like creaminess that goes on ultra-smooth and rich. While the formula can be smudged out, you have to be swift because it starts to set around 30 seconds in and doesn't budge thereafter—but that's part of what makes this eyeshadow so great. You can get a solid workday's wear out of this formula without it creasing, flaking or fading!
Shade-wise, Tilbury recommends "Champagne Diamonds" or "Black Diamonds" for blue eyes, "Bronzed Garnet" or "Amethyst Aphrodisiac" for green eyes, "Golden Quartz" or "Smokey Emerald" for hazel eyes, and "Dark Pearl" or "Amber Haze" for brown eyes. At the time of this review, CharlotteTilbury.com also launched a few more shades exclusive to their site, including a matte black shade. For the most part, the recommended parings are good, though you can certainly switch things up based on your own preferences.
Keep in mind that if you're trying to downplay crepey eyelids, the metallic finish will work against you. If you don't fall into that category, the finely-milled luminous pigments add a beautiful glow to accentuate eyes. By the way, we found layering powder shadow over Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil also worked beautifully, with even longer-lasting results.
On the downside, we would have preferred a self-sharpening design as opposed to this old school pencil style, which requires manual sharpening (and doesn't come with a mechanism to do so). We were also a bit annoyed by the cap, which had a hard time staying put when tossed in our makeup bag (judging by other consumer reviews it sounds like this is a common complaint we hope the brand will fix).
The bottom line: While anyone can easily use Charlotte Tilbury's Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencils, we're especially excited for those prone to oily skin and relentlessly creasing shadows—the longevity is that damn good! We did have to drop the rating down a notch due to the packaging not being up to par, but considering there is so much else to love about Colour Chameleon Colour Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil, this still a beautiful option to consider!
- Easy-to-apply, fragrance-free pencil has a gel-like creaminess that goes on smooth and rich.
- Recommended shade pairings can be helpful.
- Impressive longevity that resists flaking, fading or creasing.
- Luminous, metallic hues add a beautiful pop of glow.
- Packaging isn't on par with the price. (Not self-sharpening and the cap persistently falls off.)
Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance
Charlotte Tilburys journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.
One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesnt mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.
Tilburys skincare, on the other hand, doesnt fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).
In no small way Tilburys years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you dont mind the $$$ factor, its worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.
Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.
Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
