CLINICAL Ceramide-Enriched Firming Eye Cream
Paula’s Choice Skincare follows up the release of its CLINICAL Ceramide-Enriched Firming Moisturizer with this similarly-named eye cream, and its concentrated formula is a worthy successor that has what it takes to back up every one of its claims.
Like the face moisturizer, CLINICAL Ceramide-Enriched Firming Eye Cream is packaged in an opaque container with an airless pump that protects its sensitive ingredients from breaking down in the presence of light and air.
This fragrance-free cream has a rich, gel-cream texture that’s satiny-smooth and spreads easily, absorbing into skin quickly. It works well both under and over other skin care products, and under makeup as well.
Paula’s Choice claims this can visibly smooth skin around the eyes and improve certain kinds of undereye darkness, and we’re happy to say that if you have the type of dark circles that are caused by sun damage (rather than genetics) it can. This contains gold standard retinol, one of the most-researched ingredients when it comes to improving fine lines and wrinkles, as well as five ceramides which help replenish skin, improve crepe-like texture, and restore its youthful bounce.
Alongside those are numerous antioxidant-rich plant extracts, among them grape seed and pomegranate extracts, vitamin E, and four forms of skin-brightening vitamin C.
The mineral pigment mica is also included to provide some instant brightness. As if that weren’t enough, there are also hydrating non-fragrant plant oils, and peptides which can help skin look younger and firmer.
We admit, this eye cream seems pricey; however, we’re not aware of another in this price range that offers such an impressive and effective mix of retinol, multiple forms of vitamin C, ceramides, and other potent antioxidants all in stable packaging. If the price is holding you back, keep in mind you can also experiment with the brand’s CLINICAL Ceramide-Enriched facial moisturizer, as any well-formulated facial moisturizer can also be used around the eyes (see More Info on why not everyone needs an eye cream).

Why You May Not Need an Eye Cream: There’s much you can do to address signs of aging around your eyes, but it’s not mandatory to use a product that claims to be special for the eye area. Any product loaded with antioxidants, emollients, skin-repairing and skin-brightening agents, and skin-soothing ingredients will also work well in the eye area. Those ingredients don’t have to come in a product labeled eye cream, eye gel, eye serum, or eye balm—they can be present in any well-formulated moisturizer or serum.
Most of the products designated as exclusively for the eye area are not really necessary because they contain nothing special for the eye area, they come in packaging that will not maintain the effectiveness of their key ingredients, and/or they are poorly formulated.
Just because a product is labeled as a special eye-area treatment does not mean it’s good for the eye area, or for any part of the face; in fact, many can make matters worse.
It’s staggering how many eye-area products lack even the most basic ingredients to help skin. For example, most eye-area products don’t contain sunscreen, which is a serious problem because it leaves skin around your eyes vulnerable to sun damage—and that absolutely will make dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles worse! Of course, for nighttime use, eye-area products without sun protection are just fine. If you opt to apply an eye cream without sunscreen during the day, be sure to apply a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater over it.
Any product you use in the eye area must be well formulated and appropriate for the skin type around your eyes. You might prefer to use a product specially labeled as an eye cream, but you might do just as well by applying your regular facial moisturizer and/or serum around your eyes. Experiment to see what combination of products gives you the best results.
A ceramide-rich blend of wrinkle-fighting ingredients including anti-aging retinol, multiple forms of antioxidant vitamin C and targeted peptides, delivers visibly firmer, youthful-looking skin.
Paula's Choice Skincare At-A-Glance
Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products.
As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable, from acne to wrinkles.
Paulas Choice Skincare relies on published research where available to discover the best ingredients for skin. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down. The line is also 100% fragrance-free.
Disclosure: Paula Begoun is the creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.
Why are Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedias criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.

We’re fascinated by skin care and makeup products and thrilled when they meet or exceed our expectations, but we’re also disappointed when they fail to perform as claimed, are wildly overpriced, or contain ingredients scientific research has proven can hurt skin.
Our mission has always been to help you find the best products for your skin, no matter your budget or preferences. Beautypedia’s thorough and insightful reviews cut through the hype and provide reliable recommendations for all ages, skin types, and skin tones.
