Brand Overview

First things first: If you're wondering what makes a BB cream special here's the scoop: Generally speaking, BB creams are little more than tinted moisturizers. Most contain some beneficial ingredients including sun protection, but the same can be said of well-formulated tinted moisturizers so there's really no advantage in terms of multi-tasking. BB creams from East Asian brands tend to be thicker and offer more coverage while those from Western brands tend to be sheerer, but again there's nothing particularly special about their formulas.

In this case, Clear Difference Complexion Perfecting BB Creme SPF 35 is supposed to be particularly beneficial for concealing blemishes and pores. It also promises to hydrate and soothe skin. But is this formula a good one for blemish-prone skin and large pores?

While Clear Difference Complexion Perfecting BB Creme SPF 35 contains some ingredients that can help with acne and repair sun-damaged skin, it also contains a couple of fragrant plant extracts (from lemon and rosemary) used in amounts that can pose a risk of irritation. However, the extracts from these fragrant plants can be beneficial, too, and in terms of being fragrant, they're not as potent as the concentrated oil form. It's a bit of a tossup for skin!

Otherwise, the creamy formula adds lightweight hydration, yet takes a bit more blending than average to obtain a seamless application. Since this product is targeted toward people with breakout prone skin you'd expect enough coverage to conceal blemishes and leftover discolorations from acne, but it goes on semi-sheer so it only somewhat evens out skin tone.

Of the three shades offered, the Light shade is peachy and a tad too dark for fair skin, and Medium Deep is on the orangey side. Those within the medium skin tone range have the most flattering option with the Medium shade. The satin-matte finish fares best for those with normal to slightly oily or combination skin.

The broad spectrum sun protection is a nice touch for anti-aging benefit, but given there are plenty of other BB creams that offer that along with a better range of shades and no risk of irritation, there's not enough good reasons to buy this one.

  • Broad spectrum sun protection for anti-aging benefit.
  • Contains potential irritants that can make acne worse.
  • Too sheer to conceal blemishes and acne marks.
  • Limited shade range doesn't flatter all skin tones.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
