Cheek to Chic Swish and Pop Blush
Charlotte Tilbury's Cheek to Chic Swish and Pop Blush is yet another product from the line that has received its share of buzz online—and we're pleased to report it lives up to the hype. Geared towards those who enjoy a subtle sheen to their blush, this collection of highly pigmented and carefully curated shades is indeed stunning.
Packaged in a lightweight, mirrored compact, each of the shades within the line (at the time of this review, there are six available) contains two complementary tones—an outer ring shade encircling a bolder center color. The instructions direct you to "swirl" your brush on the outer ring and apply to your cheekbones, then dip your brush into the center shade and blend a "pop" of bolder color onto apples of your cheeks.
The reason Charlotte Tilbury chose this design, according to the marketing for this product, is the desire to mimic the "youthful flush of excitement you get when you're in love." (Though, given the "blush inducing" names of these shades—"The Climax," "Sex on Fire," and "Ecstasy," to name a few—love may not have been the flushed glow the brand was interested in emulating!)
The effect using this two-step application is indeed a flushed, radiant glow. However, you can also blend the two shades together for a single wash of customized color. The texture is buttery-soft, allowing this powder to blend like a dream on skin—which is a good thing, as their two-shade application wouldn't be nearly as successful if either tone applied choppily to cheeks.
Each of the shades has an ultra-fine infusion of shimmer, which doesn't appear as sparkle or glitter on skin, but does lend an attractive glow. As a powder, it is suitable for any skin type, though those with oily skin may or may not prefer the sheen this formula leaves on skin.
The color range, for only having six options, includes a surprising variety of color combinations. From pale peaches and pinks to bold rosy, bronzed tones, there is something for every color preference. As mentioned earlier, the pigmentation of these formulas is impressive—layering well for more intensity—yet these can easily be sheered out for a subtle wash of color.
The price may seem like a splurge, as we first thought, but upon comparing the amount of product Cheek to Chic Swish and Pop Blush contains to other department store lines, this is actually on par, if not less expensive than blushes from brands like Tarte, NARS, Too Faced, Bobbi Brown and Urban Decay.
Due to the interesting approach this blush takes, gorgeous color selection/combinations and quality, Charlotte Tilbury's Cheek to Chic Swish and Pop Blush earned our highest recommendation. If you find yourself near a Tilbury cosmetic counter, we would recommend checking it out.
- Fragrance free.
- Gorgeous, buttery-soft powder formula.
- Beautiful color range.
- Well pigmented colors that suit a range of skin tones due to their blendability.
- You may be shy about asking for "Sex on Fire" at the cosmetics' counter.
Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance
Charlotte Tilburys journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.
One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesnt mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.
Tilburys skincare, on the other hand, doesnt fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).
In no small way Tilburys years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you dont mind the $$$ factor, its worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.
Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.
Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
