CBD Skin Balm
Cannuka’s CBD Skin Balm is a mostly-good option for intense facial or body moisture featuring CBD – that’s largely undone by a poor packaging choice.
This balm starts out as a solid, then “warms up” once it contacts skin. It’s intensely hydrating and has – as many balms do – a very emollient texture that makes it best for those with normal to dry or very dry skin.
This features well-known and effective moisturizers, among them beeswax and shea butter, plus non-fragrant grapeseed, hemp, rosehip, and coconut oils. All these serve to replenish and protect skin’s moisture barrier, and have antioxidant benefits as well. As with all Cannuka products, this also contains soothing manuka honey.
As the name of the product implies, this also contains cannabidiol (CBD, listed in the ingredients as CBD Isolate, referring to pure cannabidiol, no other cannabinoids present), which also has antioxidant properties and has emerging research showing it can soothe and promote healthier skin.
Unfortunately this balm also contains orange peel butter and grapefruit extract, citrus ingredients whose fragrance components put skin at risk for irritation. Adding another strike against this moisturizer is its jar packaging. Not only does jar packaging expose its beneficial ingredients to light and air that can cause them to lose their effectiveness, it also poses a hygiene risk – especially since this is a water-based formula (see More Info below for details).
While there are aspects to love about this balm, it simply doesn’t stack up to alternatives you’ll find on our list of best CBD skin care.
One more comment: The brand’s ingredient list is not using approved ingredient names per the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) standards. Terms such as “distilled water” and “vitamin E” along with not listing the Latin names for the plant oils makes this ingredient list a bit misleading.
- Provides intense, protective moisture for normal, dry, and very dry skin.
- Contains antioxidant and replenishing ingredients.
- Includes soothing CBD.
- Contains orange peel butter and grapefruit extract, which put skin at risk for irritation.
- Packaged in a jar, which compromises its beneficial ingredients and poses a hygiene issue.
Jar Packaging & Anti-Aging Moisturizers: Beneficial anti-aging ingredients, which include all plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients, are unstable, which means they begin to break down in the presence of air. Once a jar is opened and lets air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate, becoming less and less effective. Routine exposure to daylight is also problematic for these ingredients.
Jar packaging is also unsanitary because you dip your fingers into the jar with each use, contaminating the product. This stresses the preservative system, especially in water-based formulas, leading to further deterioration of the beneficial ingredients.
Remember: The ingredients that provide the most benefit in addressing visible signs of aging must be in airtight or air-restrictive packaging to remain effective throughout usage. Buying products in this type of packaging means that the ingredients have the best chance of remaining effective—to the benefit of your skin.

This concentrated face and body balm soothes skin with rich hydration and powerful ingredients to help calm and correct extremely dry skin. The unique combination of CBD and Manuka honey create a rich moisturizer that warms on contact to nourish and protect — from head-to-toe.
Cannuka’s backstory is that it was started by a husband and wife team who had a passion for legalizing industrial hemp and in that process, they discovered the benefits of topical CBD for skin. The wife (Kelly Bumgarner) also happens to be dermatologist.
According to Cannuka’s website, their products are, “simple, natural and only include essential beneficial ingredients.” At the heart of the brand you’ll find CBD plays a role in every formula, joined by manuka honey—both of which are an amalgamation that comprise the brand’s name. In terms of CBD, they’re sourcing legitimate cannabidiol, which delivers potent anti-inflammatory properties. Their manuka honey has a complementary effect by adding to the skin-calming and antioxidant properties.
Unfortunately, things go downhill from there as Cannuka’s formulas tend to get off track with fragrant essential oils and citrus-based ingredients that pose a risk of inciting skin-irritating inflammation. Furthermore, some products come in jar packaging, ultimately compromising the stability of many of their beneficial light- and air-sensitive ingredients.
