Brand Overview

Cannuka’s CBD Hydrating Lip Balm is intriguing because it contains cannabidiol (CBD)—we only wish that the formula wasn’t fragranced with potentially irritating ingredients.

Housed in a Chapstick style component, this beeswax-based balm contains soothing, antioxidant-rich oils (grapeseed, hemp seed, rose hip and coconut) to replenish delicate, dehydrated lips. The texture is on the lighter side for a lip balm—not rich enough to last for hours on end but it provides an adequate dose of immediate hydration.

The star of the show is the 5 milligrams of CBD isolate which checks out as legitimate cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating part of marijuana and hemp plants that research shows has potent anti-inflammatory properties. For compromised skin, including chapped lips, it shows promise for providing soothing relief.

As for the manuka honey that the brand calls out, it’s indeed a good natural ingredient to help form a soothing, protective barrier on lips.

Unfortunately, the orange peel butter and grapefruit extract in this formula put those benefits in jeopardy. While their citrus scent may smell good, their fragrant components have the potential to incite irritating inflammation.

Ultimately, you’re better off with alternatives you’ll find on our lists of best lip balms and/or best CBD skin care.

On a more technical note, Cannuka lists ingredient names such as “distilled water” and “vitamin E” that are not up to date with the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) standards. While that isn’t a deal breaker, we hope they pay more attention to this in the future as it makes it much easier for consumers to compare ingredients and not worry about alternate names.

Pros:
  • Contains 5 milligrams of cannabidiol to provide soothing comfort for chapped lips.
  • Formulated with antioxidant-rich plant oils to replenish hydration.
  • Manuka honey helps form a protective barrier.
Cons:
  • Fragrant components of the scented formula may cause irritating inflammation.
  • Doesn’t offer prolonged hydration compared to the best lip balms out there.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

The unique combination of CBD and Manuka honey easily absorbs onto the top layer, as well as under the lip’s surface, to help repair and fight against future damage.

Bees Wax, Grapeseed Oil, Shea Butter, Hemp Seed Oil, Orange Peel Butter, Vitamin E, Rose Hip Oil, Coconut Oil, Distilled Water, Potassium Sorbate, Grapefruit Extract, Manuka Honey, CBD Isolate (5mg).

Cannuka’s backstory is that it was started by a husband and wife team who had a passion for legalizing industrial hemp and in that process, they discovered the benefits of topical CBD for skin. The wife (Kelly Bumgarner) also happens to be dermatologist.

According to Cannuka’s website, their products are, “simple, natural and only include essential beneficial ingredients.” At the heart of the brand you’ll find CBD plays a role in every formula, joined by manuka honey—both of which are an amalgamation that comprise the brand’s name. In terms of CBD, they’re sourcing legitimate cannabidiol, which delivers potent anti-inflammatory properties. Their manuka honey has a complementary effect by adding to the skin-calming and antioxidant properties.

Unfortunately, things go downhill from there as Cannuka’s formulas tend to get off track with fragrant essential oils and citrus-based ingredients that pose a risk of inciting skin-irritating inflammation. Furthermore, some products come in jar packaging, ultimately compromising the stability of many of their beneficial light- and air-sensitive ingredients.
