Brand Overview

Dr. Sturm’s Calming Serum lives up to its name by providing a nourishing blend of ingredients that calm sensitized skin, while adding a pinch of soothing hydration.

The brand touts their “complex of Cardiospermum, Echium Plantagineum and Sunflower,” as the hero of the formula, and we’d agree. This blend offers significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties ideal for comforting and re-strengthening skin. Cardiospermum particularly stands out with research showing it to be helpful for compromised, itchy skin due to its cortisone-like action.

We’re also happy to report that all of the oils Dr. Sturm chose for this formula are of the non-fragrant variety, each providing beneficial compounds such as fatty acids and phospholipids that replenish skin. In particular, the sunflower seed oil stands out for calming signs of stressed, irritated skin.

Calming serum contains plenty of other gentle yet good-for-skin ingredients including glycerin, purslane, and panthenol. Just keep in mind the frosted packaging isn’t ideal for protecting the stability for this formula’s delicate antioxidants (light exposure allows them to break down prematurely). We’d just suggest keeping this stored some place dark like a closed drawer to limit the light exposure.

The bottom line: Dr. Sturm positions Calming Serum as a soothing treatment that can be used to combat sensitized skin after, “sun exposure, shaving, sleep loss, jet lag, air conditioning or environmental pollution,” and we’d have to agree, it’s a great for addressing all of that, as well as calming other sources of skin irritation. The fluid milky texture sinks into skin without feeling oily or greasy, making this a lightly hydrating formula anyone can use!

Pros:
  • Contains an anti-inflammatory complex of ingredients to calm signs of irritation.
  • Features a gentle mix of replenishing ingredients, antioxidants and beneficial fatty acids.
  • Fluid milky texture delivers lightweight hydration, compatible with all skin types.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Needs to be stored away from light to avoid exposure that could degrade key ingredients.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

Enriched with an active, plant-based complex of Cardiospermum, Echium Plantagineum and Sunflower, Dr. Barbara Sturm’s CALMING SERUM soothes and rebalances irritated skin. Purslane, an anti-aging powerhouse, helps calm the skin and reduce visible signs of irritation. Perfect for soothing your complexion after sun exposure, shaving, sleep loss, jet lag, air conditioning or environmental pollution. When used over time, this serum strengthens the skin’s natural defenses, minimizing the skin’s sensitized reaction.

As the founder behind her namesake line, Dr. Barbara Sturm has a long history as a physician specializing in aesthetics. As the story goes, Dr. Sturm translated the science from her clinical research on inflammation into what has now evolved into her line of “molecular” skin care products.

The brand is self-described as being “formulated for those who yearn for an uncomplicated, yet highly effective skincare regime that provides hydration, nutrition and regeneration glow.” So, do the products live up to the hype? Yes… and no.

As with most skin care brands, some of Dr. Sturm’s products are well-formulated while others fall short. While many of the formulas are beneficial, we have to point out that they’re not quite as robust in terms of a well-rounded mix of ingredients when compared to the top formulas that we review. That doesn’t make them bad, it’s just less state-of-the-art than we’d anticipate, especially at such a high price point.

One thing that stands out as a positive is that the formulas tend to steer clear of irritating fragrance and other known skin sensitizing ingredients. Dr. Sturm is also known for using beneficial antioxidants, including super antioxidant purslane.

On the downside, a handful of the products come in jar packaging, which compromises their efficacy. As for the cost, we’ll leave it up to you to decide if it’s within your budget.
