Bye Bye Makeup 3-in-1 Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm
Bye Bye Makeup 3-in-1 Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm is a very effective way to quickly remove all types of makeup without leaving a greasy residue behind and without stripping skin. In fact, this semi-solid cleansing balm leaves skin feeling smooth and refreshed. It's ideal for normal to dry skin, including breakout-prone skin that's also dry.
Housed in a large jar, this balm appears tricky to use at first, like scooping butter with your fingers; however, carefully scooping a bit out and applying to skin, you'll find that the thick formula melts over the face and is easy to spread. A thin layer is all that's needed to remove makeup and excess oil, and this rinses surprisingly well with just water.
It Cosmetics even recommends rinsing with water, but that likely removes most of the "Serum Concentrate" ingredients the company claims are "activated on contact" to help protect skin from free radicals. Given the lack of residue after rinsing, it's doubtful that the antioxidants in the formula (most of which are water soluble) remain on skin to help defend it.
There's also the issue that antioxidants deteriorate with routine exposure to light and air, which is exactly what they get when packaged in a jar, and the product is meant to be used daily so the jar is opened at least daily. Still, we're not going to downgrade this cleanser for its packaging because it contains some great hydrating ingredients (most of which are not affected by exposure to light and air) and works even better to soften skin if left on for a minute or so before rinsing.
The only drawback, and it's not too significant given the low amount, is the inclusion of fragrant orange oil. This citrus oil poses a slight risk of irritation and isn't the best for use around the eyes—a shame, because this cleansing balm works so well to remove even the most tenacious eyeliner or waterproof mascara.
What about the claim that this cleanser is also your serum step? Although the formula contains lots of ingredients normally seen in well-formulated anti-aging serums, once again we're skeptical about whether or not many of them remain on skin in concentrations great enough to be beneficial. So, keep that other leave-on serum in your routine and consider Bye Bye Makeup for what it does best: swift removal of any type of makeup while hydrating and softening (not drying out) skin.
- Quickly removes all types of makeup.
- Wonderfully moisturizing, yet not greasy once rinsed.
- Rinses surprisingly well, leaving skin clean and soft.
- Provides even more hydration if left on for a minute before rinsing, so you can "customize" the amount of moisture.
- Contains fragrant orange oil, which poses a risk of irritation.
- The "Serum Concentrate" ingredients probably don't remain to provide much benefit after a thorough rinsing.
Bye Bye Makeup is your revolutionary fast-acting cleanser, makeup remover and anti-aging serum all in one step! Developed with plastic surgeons, this sulfate-free formula infuses your skin with deep-cleansing extracts and botanicals to completely remove all traces of makeup and impurities without drying or irritation. At the same time, proprietary Skin-Softening Serum Concentrate is activated on contact, providing a soft barrier of moisture that helps ward off free-radicals and pollutants for healthier, younger-looking results.
Strengths: Excellent color products, standout foundation and concealer options, impressive highlighters.
Weaknesses: Can be on the pricey side; has a few makeup products with exaggerated anti-aging claims.
IT Cosmetics (the IT stands for Innovative Technology) is the creation of Jamie Kern Lima, a former Miss USA pageant contestant and TV news anchor. Lima founded IT Cosmetics in 2008, selling her products in boutique stores and on QVC, then expanding into Canada in 2009. Since then, the line has gotten a lot of exposure with featured reports and stories on network television, including prominent mentions on the ABC reality show Dancing With the Stars.
The labels on most IT Cosmetics products reveal a variety of age-defying claims centered around ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, vitamins, and collagen. Those are indeed great additions to any cosmetic product, but unfortunately, the combination of compact or jar packaging among the formulas that include those helpful ingredients isnt a good thing.
Air exposure compromises ingredients like antioxidants and peptides, rendering them useless. While that doesnt affect the quality of the makeup, it is worth noting if you were hoping for an anti-aging edge from IT Cosmetics antioxidant-boosted blush or powders.
Of course, IT Cosmetics does have products that are absolutely worth checking out. The line boasts an excellent range of color products, highlighters, foundations and many more worth consideration. As with any line that has a mix of standouts and caveats, shopping using our reviews to guide you is a great way to ensure youll at least get your moneys worth, and your skin will be the better for it.
