Brand Overview

Charlotte Tilbury's Beach Stick Lip to Cheek Dewy Colour Pop has a creamy texture that is workable on cheeks and lips as claimed. Each adds a pop of glowing color for a sun-kissed, beachy look, also as promised. The only caveat is that the color's longevity is merely mediocre—but there's no denying it's beautiful while it lasts.

First, let's address the shades. Each varies in intensity and shimmer and hence, may be used for different purposes. The most compatible shades for lip/cheek color are "Es Vedra" (which packs a punch of semi-opaque coral-red color with a golden sheen), "Las Salina" (a shimmering, sheer, bright golden pink) and "Formentera" (a "sun-kissed berry color" with hints of brown and rose, less shimmery than the others).

The "Moon Beach" shade has an iridescent sheer peach hue that has more shimmer than pigmentation, and as such, it works better as a highlighter. Last is the glowing "universal bronzer" shade, "Ibiza," which is a bit dark for lighter skin tones—though, like all of the shades, it sheers outs easily.

In terms of performance, when used as blush, Beach Stick illuminates skin with a dewy, luminous finish. True to its claims, it meshes smoothly with skin rather than setting into fine lines or pores. The formula has a nice amount of slip, allowing it to glide over skin without looking (or feeling) heavy or greasy. Unfortunately, as we mentioned in the opening, the longevity of their color is mediocre. On average, each faded a few hours in—but they're beautifully radiant while they last.

As a lip color, Beach Stick's large rounded tip is cumbersome for precise application, but if you like the idea of a dual-purpose product, this fits the bill. It offers average wear time for a cream lipstick.

What about Charlotte Tilbury's boast that this contains "ceramidone" to act as a "poly-filler to refill and plump up the skin, giving you a youthful, flawless skin surface?" Ceramidone (listed as octyldodecyl PCA on the ingredient list) does play a role in creating the overall smooth texture of this product, but don't get caught up in thinking it actually plumps skin—there's no research to support that. It's an ordinary, but good, cosmetic ingredient.

On another note, you'll likely notice the vanilla scent of Beach Stick, which comes from the inclusion of the synthetic flavoring agent ethyl vanillin. It isn't overpowering and isn't cause for concern in regards to any potential to irritate skin.

In the end, Beach Stick has merit as a multi-tasking lip and cheek product, but its scant wear time holds it back from our highest rating, especially at this steep of a price point. Regardless, if you want to give it a go, those prone to breakouts should take note that the kinds of ingredients that hold stick makeup in their solid form can lead to, you guessed it, more breakouts. For all other skin types, it's good to go!

Pros:
  • Delivers illuminating color for a "sunkissed" look as promised.
  • Stick cream texture meshes smoothly over skin rather than setting into fine lines or pores.
  • Colors sheer out evenly.
  • Workable as both a lip and cheek color as claimed.
Cons:
  • Doesn't offer long-lasting color; tends to fade
Jar Packaging: No

Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance

Charlotte Tilburys journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.

One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesnt mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.

Tilburys skincare, on the other hand, doesnt fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).

In no small way Tilburys years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you dont mind the $$$ factor, its worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.

Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.

Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
