Bare With Me Hydrating Jelly Primer
NYX’s Bare With Me Hydrating Jelly Primer is an intriguing product in its concept, but leaves something to be desired both in its execution and its packaging.
The most fascinating aspect of this primer is its texture – it truly does have a jelly-like texture (it’s remarkably similar to Jell-O, in fact!). No matter how much of this clear gel you scoop out, it goes back to its original “shape,” looking like it hasn’t been touched at all. It’s a cool visual and tactile feature, but has nothing to do with its performance.
This primer is easy to apply; the quivering jelly texture quickly melts to the feeling of lightweight moisture (which is essentially what this is, a light moisturizer), that glides across skin with ease, providing hydration for normal to dry skin.
There are very few impressive ingredients here – mainly a sprinkling of aloe, cucumber, and some vitamin E – but at least NYX doesn’t make any claims about this primer’s ability to act as a skin care product.
When it came to extending the wear time of makeup, this fragrance-free gel is a bit tricky; it helps makeup adhere better to skin, but that’s thanks in part to a stickiness that never quite dries down, a sensation that’s bound to make this primer polarizing.
More problematic, though, is its packaging: it comes in a jar. Especially for water-based products (like this one is), jar packaging is a concern because it promotes bacterial growth (see More Info below for details). While we appreciate NYX’s approach, there are many better options on our list of best foundation primers.
- Helps makeup adhere more readily to skin.
- Contains some skin-beneficial ingredients.
- Fragrance free.
- Formula remains sticky after it’s dried down.
- Packaged in a jar, which compromises this product’s hygiene.
Jar Packaging & Basic Moisturizers: Jar packaging is rarely ideal, but if a moisturizer lacks antioxidants, soothing and nourishing plant extracts and oils, and skin-repairing and skin-restoring ingredients, it’s not as much of a problem because the product doesn’t contain any of those beneficial ingredients that will break down when exposed to air or light. On the other hand, jars are still unsanitary because you dip your fingers into them with each use, contaminating the product—especially water-based formulas.
So, generally, it’s best to buy products in airtight or air-restrictive packaging. But, if it’s a ho-hum ordinary moisturizer, it’s not the worst thing we can think of, although your skin deserves better than just ordinary!

Play it cool with Bare With Me Hydrating Jelly Primer. Our new gel primer hydrates the complexion and softens the appearance of pores for a bright, fresh-looking glow. This water-based gripping primer also creates an even base for smooth makeup application. Another cool tidbit: the amazing jelly texture bounces back into place no matter how much you scoop out.
This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.
It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
