Brand Overview

This moisturizing balm, claimed to be designed for a baby's skin, has a great price, but despite some very effective emollients, it's not a surefire bet for parents who want the gentlest products for their children's skin.

Kissable Cheeks Balm comes in stick form for convenient application around a baby's lips and face. The formula is a basic blend of emollients, including sweet almond oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, and sunflower seed oil. Basic in this case isn't bad, as these are all gentle moisturizing ingredients suitable for use on an infant's skin.

Despite the positives, this is a product to avoid because of the inclusion of lavender oil. While it might smell soothing, it absolutely isn't soothing for skin. Lavender can cause skin irritation, lead to allergic contact dermatitis, and cause skin cell death (Sources: The New Ideal in Skin Health: Separating Fact from Fiction, Thornfeldt, Carl M.D., Allured Books, 2010, pages 286–287; Contact Dermatitis, January 2008, pages 9–14; Hautarzt, February 2002, pages 93–97; Contact Dermatitis, August 1999, page 111; and Cell Proliferation, June 2004, pages 221–229). This is bad news for a baby's skin, which is extremely delicate and has an immune system that's still forming, which makes it more likely to experience a sensitized reaction.

Give this one a pass, and instead choose one of the excellent fragrance-free products mentioned in our article Skin Care for Babies and Children.

  • Contains a blend of emollients to gently moisturize a baby's skin.
  • Lavender oil can lead to skin irritation, cell death, and allergic contact dermatitis.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax, Cire Dabeille), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Tocopherol.

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. Its also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brands offerings, but some to be wary of, see our individual reviews on Burt's Bees products for more details.
