Brand Overview

Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Bronzers offers two options, each being a blend of warm, tan tones infused with a subtle luminosity—and the result is beautiful. These fragrance free pressed-powder bronzers are an option for any skin type, but those with very oily skin may find the "glow" they impart undesirable. Whether you choose Radiant Bronze Light or Luminous Bronze Light, most will find these are best for light to medium-deep skin tones—read on to find out why.

Packaged in the brand's trademark mirrored-finish compact, the two shades are well pigmented and require little product to achieve rich color—fortunately, each blends well onto skin and are easily sheered out for a natural look.

The word bronze is a key word here as both shades are literally two different variations of this particular color, which is a blend of brown and copper tones—the result is decidedly warm in nature. If you fall within a light to a medium-deep skin tone range, you may find these exceptionally workable and flattering, but their depth of pigment and undertones makes them somewhat tricky for those with fairer complexions. That's because the best "bronze" shade for lighter skin tones is generally a more neutral brown tone rather than the traditional warmer hue true bronze imparts.

The degree of shimmer in each is (fortunately) deceptive—in the pan, they each appear loaded with champagne or gold particles. However, once applied to skin, the effect for both is subdued considerably, leaving a subtle glow behind. This is a good thing, as had either been overtly shimmery, we would have less enthusiastic about recommending this as an option for an all-over bronzer!

Hourglass Cosmetics has a winner in our eyes with this powder bronzer—both shades are beautiful, work well for a wide range of skin tones and as a result, earned our highest rating. While the Ambient Lighting Bronzers are on the pricey side, given their exceptional pigment level, they will likely last you some time should you decide to splurge.

Pros:

  • Beautifully rich true bronze tones.
  • Add a subtle glow to skin without overloading it with shimmer.
  • Fragrance-free.

Cons:

  • It is a bit of a splurge, but it's one that will last you quite some time.

Hourglass At-A-Glance

Hourglass Cosmetics bills itself as luxury performance makeup, and for the most part that description is apt. The luxury aspect is apparent in the brand's packaging, which evokes sophistication and glamour. As for what's inside, while not every Hourglass product is a blockbuster, it has a number of strong products in its lineup, particularly its Ambient Lighting collection of powder makeup products. There are also some standout options for lip colors, and its Veil Fluid Makeup Oil SPF 15 foundation is a blogger and Beautypedia favorite for good reason (you can find out exactly why in our individual review). Hourglass does offer a small selection of skincare, but when it comes to this brand makeup is truly where its strengths lie.
