Brand Overview

Smashbox's Always On Liquid Eyeliner does a decent job, but it isn't as impressive as the top-rated eyeliners on the market.

The liquid formula is dispensed via a felt-tip applicator that's somewhat flexible but not flimsy. For the most part, the color goes on smoothly; occasionally we found ourselves having to apply another layer to ensure fully saturated color. The tapered point allows for a thick or thin line—though it's not as precise as some the latest "micro" (very fine) tip applicators.

Always On Liquid Eyeliner stays put decently well. We did notice our "wings" fading by the end of the day a couple times (this seemed to be hit or miss) but smudging and flaking were never issues. The formula withstood our waterproof test (you'll want a good makeup remover to take it off).

All in all, this isn't a bad option, but because of inconsistent performance, we wouldn't rank it up there with "must-have" status.

*Note: We're not overly concerned about alcohol as the fourth ingredient in this type of formula, but if you have sensitive eyelids it could prove to be irritating.

Pros:
  • Waterproof; doesn't smudge or flake once set.
  • Easy to create bold lines.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Occasional performance inconsistencies.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

Smashbox At-A-Glance

Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeuptheir great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.

Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primerswhether thats a necessary step is up for debatebut nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
