Brand Overview

Burt’s Bees All Aglow Lip & Cheek Stick isn’t a new or innovative approach to double-duty makeup, but it’s a good one, and for a good price as well.

This blush/lip balm combo comes in a plastic tube and the product inside swivels up. The stick features a solid color surrounding a white coconut oil “core.” It’s visually interesting, though it doesn’t make any difference in how this product applies or performs.

All Aglow Lip & Cheek Stick is easy to apply on lips and cheeks due to its high concentration of emollient plant oils and butters (among them jojoba, sunflower and the aforementioned coconut oil, + cocoa butter). These ingredients give it a smooth texture that glides across skin and is best for those with normal to dry skin (folks with oily/combination and acne-prone skin will find this is too waxy and emphasizes shine on the cheeks).

The color quality starts out sheer but is easily buildable, and all the shades (which include standard pinks and berries) impart a fresh, dewy-looking flush to skin. When used on lips, this functions as a tinted balm, giving a sheer “just bitten” appearance.

This product performs well over time in both aspects. Despite its emollient nature, it stands up as a blush to a full day of wear without fading. As a lip balm, it lasts for about three hours before fading to a faint stain.

The only drawback is that this contains fragrance (listed as aroma/flavor) and the fragrance ingredient linalool. The smell isn’t unpleasant (it’s lightly fruity), but fragrance always has the potential to cause irritation, which is not good for skin.

Still, there’s enough to like about this blush/balm combo to make it worth consideration, especially if you’re looking for convenient, 2-in-1 makeup to use on-the-go.

  • Easy to apply and blend.
  • Imparts a healthy-looking natural glow to lips and cheeks.
  • As a blush, lasts a full day without fading.
  • As a lip balm, fades to an attractive stain after about three hours of wear.
  • Contains fragrance and the fragrance ingredient linalool, which aren’t the best for skin.

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. Its also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brands offerings, but some to be wary of, see our individual reviews on Burt's Bees products for more details.
