Brand Overview

Burt’s Bees All Aglow Bronzer & Highlighter Stick provides another drugstore option for on-the-go makeup, and it’s a good one, especially for those who love the “no makeup-makeup” look but with a touch of sheer shimmer.

This comes in a plastic tube and the product inside swivels up. The stick features a solid color surrounding a white coconut oil “core.” It’s visually interesting, though it doesn’t make any difference in how this product applies or performs.

All Aglow Bronzer & Highlight Stick is easy to apply due to its high concentration of plant oils and butters (among them jojoba, sunflower, the aforementioned coconut oil, and cocoa butter). These ingredients give it a smooth texture that glides across skin and is best for those with normal to dry skin (folks with oily/combination and acne-prone skin will find this is too waxy and that the finish emphasizes oily shine).

As far as the color quality, this starts out sheer and is buildable, yet never appears overdone. It provides a subtle, dewy glow to skin instead of a more dramatic “strobe” effect, making it suitable for everyday wear.

It lasts a full day without fading and comes in a small but workable range of shades include a true bronze, gold shimmer, and pearl shimmer. The bronze shade, labeled Golden Shimmer, provides a light deposit of sheer color and a gleaming, slightly wet-looking shine that doesn’t feel greasy. Just note this isn’t a great option if you want a more noticeable bronzed effect.

The only drawback is that this contains fragrance (listed as Aroma/Flavor) and the fragrance ingredient linalool. The smell isn’t unpleasant (it’s lightly fruity), but fragrance always has the potential to cause irritation, which is not good for skin.

Still, there’s enough to like about this to make it worth consideration, especially if you’re looking for convenient makeup to use on-the-go.

Pros:
  • Easy to apply and blend.
  • Imparts a healthy-looking natural glow to lips and cheeks.
  • Lasts a full day without fading.
Cons:
  • Contains fragrance (aroma) and the fragrance ingredient linalool, which aren’t the best for skin.

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. Its also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brands offerings, but some to be wary ofsee our individual reviews on Burts Bees products for more details.
