Brand Overview

We're big fans of facial oils: for use on their own, or as a way to make your favorite moisturizer richer. Many brands offer facial oils, but Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Recovery Mask-in-Oil is a shining example of how to do it right!

If you're wondering about the "mask" portion of the name, this isn't a moisturizing mask in the traditional sense; rather, it's meant to be used over Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Serum to "lock in" the serum's power. Of course you can apply Advanced Night Repair Recovery Mask-in-Oil over any serum or treatment product, or just blend a few drops over dry areas, including around the eyes.

Housed in a transparent brown bottle with a dropper-tip applicator, this fluid, moisturizing, fragrance-free formula contains a triglyceride, which allows this oil to feel lighter than most pure oil formulas, and happens to be a great replenishing ingredient, too. The plant oils are good sources of fatty acids and antioxidants, which means this product's claim of preparing skin for environmental assault are valid, although you'll still need sunscreen each morning. And finally, the lightness of this product allows it to layer beautifully.

The one downside is the transparent packaging mentioned above; it exposes the delicate ingredients to light, which can cause them to break down. For best results, store this mask-in-oil away from light.

  • Excellent combination of replenishing and richly moisturizing ingredients.
  • All the oils and plant extracts provide antioxidant benefits.
  • Surprisingly light, and fluid formula absorbs easily.
  • Layers beautifully with other products.
  • Makes good on its claims to prepare skin for environmental assaults (but you'll still need sunscreen).
  • Fragrance free.
  • Transparent brown bottle packaging should be stored away from light.

The concentrated formula strengthens, nourishes and rebuilds, helping to create a virtual nighttime cocoon. Prepares skin for the day ahead by boosting its natural resistance to daily environmental assaults.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
