Acne Face & Body Scrub
Peter Thomas Roth's Acne Face & Body Scrub perpetuates a longstanding myth about blemishes – that you can scrub them away (you can't!). That aside, if this scrub was better formulated it would've earned a good rating; however, a few formulary mistakes mean it's below-average at best.
There are a couple of positive aspects about this scrub: the particles featured are gentle jojoba beads suspended in a gel that work to smooth skin without damaging it. Salicylic acid is also present and despite being an effective exfoliant when used in leave-on product, it's not as effective when quickly rinsed (see More Info for details).
Adding to the issues is the fact that this contains potentially-irritating cinnamon bark extract, along with fragrance and fragrance ingredients, as well as sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, one of the more drying and skin-aggravating cleansing agents available (this leaves skin feeling slightly tight once it's been rinsed off). That means there's potential for skin irritation, which can lead to increased oil production and increased acne breakouts.
Another note: since this product has its ingredients listed in alphabetical order, it's hard to tell just how much of these problematic components you're getting.
As for the so-called Sepicontrol Complex that's supposed to help reduce oil? Part of this blend includes the cinnamon bark extract we mentioned, so it's unlikely to be of any help.
Instead of this problematic scrub, it's better to select from among the far superior options on our list of best exfoliants (including scrubs).
- Scrub particles are gentle and non-irritating.
- Contains cinnamon bark, fragrance, and fragrance ingredients that can irritate skin.
- Contains one of the more drying detergent cleansing agents.
- Salicylic acid is more effect against acne in a leave-on product.
This cleanser contains salicylic acid, an ingredient that when included in a well-formulated leave-on product works beautifully to gently exfoliate skin. However, in a cleanser or scrub, it's are far less effective, if effective at all, because it's are rinsed off before it can begin to work.
So, if you're hoping this scrub will provide exfoliating benefits, think again. On the other hand, it can provide hydrating benefits during its brief contact with skin.
Because Peter Thomas Roth makes acne-fighting claims that are not likely to occur, this product's rating is not as good as it would have been.
Peter Thomas Roth At-A-Glance
Peter Thomas Roth is a large but straightforward line with mostly uncomplicated formulations that, for the most part, are quite good and state-of-the-art. Unlike many product lines, most of the acne, AHA, BHA, sunscreen, and moisturizing products contain what they should to be effective and helpful for skin.
Even more impressive are the well-formulated cleansers, sunscreens, AHA products, and skin lighteners. The moisturizers have improved somewhat, and most are now packaged so that the light- and air-sensitive ingredients remain stable. In fact, Roth's packaging deserves special mention because it is exceptionally utilitarian.
After all that glowing praise, what you should be aware of are the instances of products containing potential irritants (noted in their respective reviews) as well as the products in jar packaging that contain ingredients which are sensitive to air and light.
