Brand Overview

Nivea's a brand that has a large amount of products designed to soften lips, but A Kiss of Smoothness Hydrating Lip Care SPF 15 is among its best options. Thanks to a formula that protects and soothes lips, this earns our highest rating on Beautypedia.

A Kiss of Smoothness Hydrating Lip Care SPF 15 comes is a standard semi-solid lip balm in a twist-up tube. Though it does contain some fragrance, the amount is minimal (it's the last ingredient on the list) and isn't likely to cause irritation.

The real strength of this lip balm is in its SPF, which is provided by an in-part avobenzone formula. That means it's broad-spectrum, protecting lips from both the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Though we recommend SPF 30 or higher for facial products (because most people don't apply them liberally enough to get full sun protection with a lower SPF), this gets high marks for its SPF 15 rating because it can be applied liberally and frequently, and at this price, it likely will be!

The rest of A Kiss of Smoothness Hydrating Lip Care SPF 15's ingredients are made up of proven emollients like castor oil, glycerin, and shea butter. We would have like to have seen a greater range of skin-conditioning and anti-irritant ingredients included, along with more antioxidants to boost the sun protection.

As it stands, though, A Kiss of Smoothness Hydrating Lip Care SPF 15 is a good and inexpensive way to moisturize and protect lips, and one we recommend!

Pros:
  • Provides reliable broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Contains a number of emollients that will make lips feel softer and smoother.
Cons:
  • Contains a small amount of fragrance.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: Yes

Nivea At-A-Glance

Strengths: Budget-friendly; good makeup removers; a gentle scrub; some worthwhile lip balms.

Weaknesses:Several boring formulas; no products to treat breakouts or lighten skin discolorations; problematic toners; disappointing self-tanners; the anti-cellulite products are a joke.

Nivea is a globally known brand owned by Beiersdorf, the same company behind department-store brand La Prairie and drugstore mainstay Eucerin. Among those three brands, Nivea's product selection is the weakest (which isn't saying much, because none of these lines have much of anything to offer skin). For Nivea, uninspired formulas abound, presenting limited options unless you have normal to dry skin, and even those have exceptionally inelegant formulas. The enduring popularity of this line has more to do with advertising and perhaps tradition (it has been around a long time) than with what any researcher would consider state-of-the-art.

Inmid-2010 Nivea re-launched most of their Visage (facial care) products on the web site drugstore.com. These products present a few well formulated, inexpensive options that are worth your attention. For more information about Nivea, owned by Beiersdorf, call (800) 227-4703 or visit www.nivea.com.
