Brand Overview

Revolution Skincare’s 15% Niacinamide Serum delivers a concentrated boost of vitamin B3 (aka niacinamide), an ingredient which offers a host of benefits for skin: minimizing enlarged pores, mitigating wrinkles and evening out skin tone. While the formula could use a few more supporting ingredients, it offers a great way to see what a high amount of niacinamide can do for you.

Packaged in a frosted glass bottle with a dropper dispenser, 15% Niacinamide Serum has a liquid texture that absorbs quickly. It’s so lightweight that you hardly know it’s there, leaving an imperceptible finish that suits any skin type. Note: while normally we would recommend storing this out of direct light to protects its ingredients, there are no key ingredients in this formula that are light-sensitive.

One of the unique things higher concentrations of niacinamide can do is normalize the pore lining which helps with issues like blackheads and other types of clogged pores (even breakouts) that leave skin looking textured.

Niacinamide is also proven to help brighten skin that has become lackluster in appearance, as well as provide wrinkle-smoothing properties thanks to its antioxidant and ceramide-stimulating power. In this formula it’s being combined with zinc PCA, an anti-inflammatory that plays a supporting role in reducing signs of aging and breakouts.

Those two ingredients aside, there’s not much else of note for this fragrance-free formula other than a touch of glycerin, which helps balance hydration. Nevertheless, this serum is worth considering as an adjunct to an already great skin care routine, and earned its rating because of the high concentration of its star ingredient.

United Kingdom-based Revolution Skincare is the skin care branch of Revolution Beauty (who also has a color cosmetic subbrand, Makeup Revolution). Launched in 2018, the brand’s founder, Adam Minto, says the line’s ethos is the same as its parent brand; providing inexpensive, fast-to-market options designed for a wide range of people.

This skin care collection isn’t exactly a “revolutionary” concept, per se – the brand has a lot in common with other up-and-comers such as The Ordinary and Good Molecules. All of these products have a focus on stripped-down formulas featuring key ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid, for example) that can be mixed, layered, and alternated in to a complete skin care routine based on personal preference and occasional needs.

Revolution’s skin care products are something of a mixed bag. There are some true winners in the bunch (among them a couple of interesting retinol alternatives), but there are also quite a few missteps. Some of the products contain the skin-drying type of alcohol and irritating citrus extracts. Then there’s the concern that most of the products are housed in frosted bottles that need to be stored away from daylight, since the packaging puts their delicate ingredients at risk of light exposure that can cause those ingredients to lose their effectiveness. Side note: We reached out to the brand several times to inquire about whether their glass bottles have a UV light coating, but we have not received a response so far.

Overall, we appreciate the approach of potent skin care at bargain prices – we just wish the execution were a bit better! You can find our more about Revolution Skincare at
