In-Shower Body Lotion Smoothing Dry Skin is positioned as a timesaving "conditioner" to be applied to wet skin while you're still in the shower or bath. It isn't meant to take the place of your body wash; instead, it's supposed to be used after your cleansing step as a way to soften and smooth skin and then rinse off "without a sticky lotion feel".
Here's the deal: If this in-shower body lotion worked as well as applying a regular body moisturizer to dry skin, we'd be all for it, but it only does a so-so job. As a result, it turns out to be a superfluous step in your routine.
The lotion-creamy formula contains a blend of rich emollients, thickeners, and film-forming agents, which give this moisturizer the ability to adhere somewhat to damp skin and partially remain behind after rinsing. It develops a slippery texture as it interacts with the water; so much so that Nivea clearly states on the product packaging to avoid applying it to the bottom of feet and recommends that you, "Thoroughly clean tub/shower with hot water after usage to remove residue and avoid slipping."
The result when you towel off and dry? Skin is left feeling more moisturized than if you had only cleansed your body, but it doesn't rival the results of a using well formulated body lotion after showering. In fact, for your drier areas, you will still likely need to follow up with a separate body cream.
The amount of fragrance it contains leaves a lingering scent, which tapers off as the day wears on. Ultimately non-fragranced is always the better way to go for irritation-free results on skin—see More Info to find out why. (Not to mention, not everyone will love the signature Nivea scent.)
Despite the "no sticky feel" claim, we noticed the texture initially leaves a tacky feel on skin. Eventually that dissipates and skin is left a little softer and smoother. Still, it doesn't feel as luxuriously hydrating as a good body moisturizer does.
While novel in concept, In-Shower Body Lotion Smoothing Dry Skin isn't quite the revolutionary skin conditioner it's made out to be.
