Milani's Lash Trifecta joins the ranks of mascaras with multi-benefit claims. The titular "trifecta" Milani refers to is lengthening, separating, and curling. While it does the first two exceptionally well, it lacks in the curling department, and so it just narrowly missed earning top honors.
Lash Trifecta comes in a plastic teal tube with a long, slightly curved brush. This mascara's brush is one of its best features as it lends itself to being able to reach each individual lash from the base to the tip. It's also long enough to reach the average length of the eye in a single coat (in most cases). It has a triangular shape with relatively short, flexible bristles which help separate and lengthen lashes to deposit rich pigment without clumping.
Unfortunately, while we did find lashes were afforded a slight "lift," we wouldn't classify it as an actual curl. If your lashes naturally have a curl to them, this may suffice on its own, but if your lashes are naturally straight, you may want to use an additional curling mascara underneath or an eyelash curler before application.
The formula is fragrance- and irritant-free and although it contains alcohol denat., because the product doesn't come into contact with skin, the alcohol will evaporate and leave skin and lashes unaffected, so this does not impact it's rating.
This is not a waterproof formula, but we did not find it to smudge or flake whatsoever, through both a standard workday and a cardio session at the gym. It also removed easily with a standard makeup remover or cleanser. Nice!
Milani's Lash Trifecta delivers on two of its three claims, providing enviable length and separation. Ultimately, because it did not provide much of a noticeable curl, it just missed earning our highest rating, but we still think it's an affordable option worth checking out, especially if you like experimenting with mascaras.

Launched in 2002, Milani Cosmetics prides itself as being an affordable beauty line with a "passion for color and a recognized need for a broader variety" for women of different ages, skin tones and income. While many brands have a limited selection of products designed for medium to dark skin, Milani has succeeded in catering to women with deeper skin tones, which is this makeup line's chief point of difference. We admire Milani for celebrating the beauty in diversity, and their dedication to providing color options that are appropriate (and appealing) to a wide range of skin tones.
Milani focuses on face and eye products, and this is where they excel. Despite being a smaller brand (compared to the likes of Cover Girl or L'Oreal), Milani products can be found tucked alongside the big makeup lines in many drugstores and stores like Target and Wal-Mart. They've definitely added a splash of color to the cosmetics aisle, and several of their inexpensive products are definitely worth a look. But as with most makeup lines, there also are some poorly executed products to avoid.
This is a diverse line with a mix of bold, classic, and trendy makeup. Although the products may be aesthetically pleasing on the shelf, their visual appeal doesn't always translate well to actual application and performance quality. In some instances, Milani's philosophy of "color, color, color and more color" misses the boat by offering glitzy, ultra-vibrant shades, instead of more options for a classic makeup application (women of color have to go to work, too, not just out for the evening). Just because you have dark skin doesn't mean your color choices need to be shocking or ultra-bold. Still, as mentioned, Milani offers some worthwhile products and their prices are budget-friendly. On balance, you'll find more to like than avoid.
