Those of you familiar with the books authored by the late, great Kevyn Aucoin will likely recall his fondness (some would say obsession) with eyebrows. Kevyn Aucoin was a master with shaping, shading, filling in, and sometimes completely recreating the eyebrows of his many subjects. Knowing this, we weren't the least bit surprised that The Precision Brow Pencil rated among the best of the brand's products. It's on the pricey side for brow pencils, yes, but it performs flawlessly and comes in a natural-looking, perfectly crafted range of shades for light blonde to near-black brows.
One of the first things you may notice about The Precision Brow Pencil is its lack of a cap. The twist-up pencil tip never needs sharpening (yay!) but the lack of a cap it can be a bit concerning, at least at first. We had this concern but after using two of these pencils and travelling all around the world with them, we can safely state that the lack of cap is a non-issue. Once wound down, the pencil "lead" stays in place and the tip is quite resistant to breaking off.
In terms of texture, the pencil is slightly on the hard side. By that we mean it's not too creamy, not the least bit greasy (so brow hairs won't get matted together or look "muddy") but it's also not as smooth as some of the powder-like brow pencils, such as those from Dior. The degree of a brow pencil's stiffness is mostly a matter of personal preference; we found the pencil formula made it very easy to expertly draw in "hairs" between natural brow hairs, emphasizing the entire brow without ever looking artificial or drawn-on. Best of all, it doesn't take a lot of pressure to get the pencil to deposit color, and its soft matte finish never smears, fades, or flakes.
There isn't much else to say about The Precision Brow Pencil other than if you prefer pencils to powders, gels, or pomades for enhancing your eyebrows, Kevyn Aucoin's valuable contribution is a must-try. If you're on the fence due to the price, perhaps it'll help to know that we've found this pencil lasts nearly nine months with near-daily use.
Note: We wish there was a shade for red to auburn brows, but aren't surprised at that shade's absence given the relatively low percentage of people whose brows are that shade, whether naturally or via hair dye.
Kevyn Aucoin was arguably one of the most iconic makeup artists of the 20th century. A self-trained, highly sought celebrity makeup artist and best-selling author, his work appeared regularly in countless fashion magazines, as well as his monthly column in Allure. Not surprisingly, his work has influenced countless makeup artists and YouTube beauty vloggers—whether they know it or not—and at the time of his passing in 2002, he had just launched a small range of products under the Kevyn Aucoin brand. Although Aucoin left us far too soon, at least his products serve to compliment his lasting legacy.
Today, the Kevyn Aucoin brand continues with his motto that anyone should be able to experiment with makeup and feel beautiful while doing so. The brand's range of unique products reflects the emphasis on makeup’s role in our lives as more than just utilitarian—it should be enjoyable, accessible, fun, and the outcome always rewarding. The approach is enhancing one’s self-esteem rather than using makeup to cover up what you or others might perceive as unattractive.
Thus, the products themselves are something of an experience to use—from their packaging (beautiful) to their focus on perfecting skin and mix of basic to bold color options. This line isn’t for those who think of makeup as a chore!
The price points are higher, to be sure, but there are also quite a few exceptional and unique standouts that allow this brand to nicely distinguish itself in a sea of makeup artist-fronted lines. There are some shortfalls here and there, but overall, it is a range that is well worth experimenting with should you happen upon a Kevyn Aucoin counter at your local Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. (Note: Kevyn Aucoin is sold online at a number of beauty sites, from Sephora to Beautylish.)
