Kevyn Aucoin's The Matte Bronzing Veil is a warm-toned bronzer that enlivens skin for a sun-kissed appearance. This light pressed powder blends effortlessly and builds color with ease, letting you choose between a sheer or a more intense tanned color. If you favor a more neutral-toned bronzer, or are looking for a contouring powder, The Matte Bronzing Veil won't be an ideal fit. Otherwise, it's a beautiful option to bring warmth to a dull complexion—no matter your skin type!
Of the two shades currently available, "Desert Days" offers a lighter medium-bronze color with a slightly orange undertone. We know "orange" may sound a bit off-putting, but don't worry, this doesn't tip the scale towards Oompa Loompa orange. Instead, it warms up the complexion with a light bronze tint. The "Desert Nights" shade is a deeper bronze color that's also on the warm side, but it's done in a way that flatters deeper skin tones.
With either shade, you need only use a light hand to get a good amount of color. Ignore claims that this multi-purpose bronzer also works to "sculpt" the face; for contouring, you'd need a more neutral bronzer.
The Matte Bronzing Veil seems to be on the powdery side when you sweep your brush across it, but fortunately, it doesn't look chalky or powdery on skin. Instead, the lightweight, finely-milled powder meshes seamlessly so you get smooth, even color. The soft matte finish wears well throughout the day, even on oily skin, and we love that it's fragrance-free so those with sensitive skin can use it too.
In the end, Kevyn Aucoin's The Matte Bronzing Veil earns our praise for its ultra-blendable bronze color and ability to enliven a dull complexion. The warm undertone of both shades may not be everyone's cup of tea, but this is an instance where trying it on helps—we were pleasantly surprised by the results!
Kevyn Aucoin was arguably one of the most iconic makeup artists of the 20th century. A self-trained, highly sought celebrity makeup artist and best-selling author, his work appeared regularly in countless fashion magazines, as well as his monthly column in Allure. Not surprisingly, his work has influenced countless makeup artists and YouTube beauty vloggers—whether they know it or not—and at the time of his passing in 2002, he had just launched a small range of products under the Kevyn Aucoin brand. Although Aucoin left us far too soon, at least his products serve to compliment his lasting legacy.
Today, the Kevyn Aucoin brand continues with his motto that anyone should be able to experiment with makeup and feel beautiful while doing so. The brand's range of unique products reflects the emphasis on makeup’s role in our lives as more than just utilitarian—it should be enjoyable, accessible, fun, and the outcome always rewarding. The approach is enhancing one’s self-esteem rather than using makeup to cover up what you or others might perceive as unattractive.
Thus, the products themselves are something of an experience to use—from their packaging (beautiful) to their focus on perfecting skin and mix of basic to bold color options. This line isn’t for those who think of makeup as a chore!
The price points are higher, to be sure, but there are also quite a few exceptional and unique standouts that allow this brand to nicely distinguish itself in a sea of makeup artist-fronted lines. There are some shortfalls here and there, but overall, it is a range that is well worth experimenting with should you happen upon a Kevyn Aucoin counter at your local Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. (Note: Kevyn Aucoin is sold online at a number of beauty sites, from Sephora to Beautylish.)
