Considering how often the term, "innovation" is tossed around in the cosmetics industry, we're more than a little skeptical when we hear it associated with a new product. Cue Cover FX's clever new Custom Cover Drops. This game changer is marketed as concentrated pigment "boosters" that can be added to any concealer, foundation or moisturizer—allowing you to add coverage and/or custom-tailor the level of tint. They are exceptionally effective at their job, and for those that love experimenting with makeup, are fun new products to consider adding to your routine.
Housed in a glass dropper-style container, Custom Cover Drops are primarily a blend of fluid silicones that blends easily into skincare products—serums, facial oils, lotions, gels, thick creams and both mineral and non-mineral sunscreens. The same is true for non-powder makeup— it mixed seamlessly into cream or liquid foundations and concealers.
Available in a staggering 24 shades, from very fair to deep skin tones, and as is customary for Cover FX, their shades range in three categories: cool (pink undertones), neutral (beige undertones) and warm (yellow undertones). In such a shade classification system, there are invariably shades that "overly commit" to their categories—some that are overtly pink, too beige, or obviously orange. The good news is these instances are few in Custom Cover Drops and easily identifiable; most should have no trouble finding a shade that suits their needs.
Cover FX recommends a single drop for light coverage, two for medium and three for full, which we found accurate. The degree of pigment in Custom Cover Drops is certainly dramatic, and offers a formidable level of coverage on its own (so if you're considering applying it straight to skin, don't—it won't look remotely natural).
There is fragrance from a flower wax ingredient, but it is quite a small concentration and given the amount of product used, it is unlikely to be a problem for most (the same goes for the amount of alcohol present).
If you are in search of a simple way to add a tint to mineral sunscreens, create your own foundation from your favorite moisturizer, add coverage or adjust the tint of a foundation or concealer, Custom Cover Drops are a unique, effective (and fun) product to consider. Though it is pricey, a bottle will last you some time given the tiny amount needed per use. It earned our highest rating for its ingenuity, and is worth checking out on your next trip to Sephora.
A note on choosing a shade: If you intend to mix this product with a mineral sunscreen, we would recommend erring on the side of one-half to one full shade darker than you would typically use. Choosing an exact shade match may result in needing to use more product to get the shade you want for such an application. If you simply want to add coverage to your concealer or foundation, opt for a close match to your natural skin tone.
Cover FX At-A-Glance
Strengths: Broad range of foundation and concealer shades for those seeking moderate to full coverage; superior mineral powder foundation; good primer; most of the products are fragrance-free (but not all); very good brushes at an attractive price point.
Weaknesses: Lip balm/lipstick contains potential irritants; color range can be a little tricky for some of their products.
Co-founded by makeup artist Lee Graff and M.A.C. Cosmetic alumni’s, Cover FX is a Canadian company specializing in camouflage makeup, the area of concentration in which Graff has focused her career as a makeup artist. According to the company Web site, Graff’s dream “was to help men and women with skin conditions face the world with confidence by offering them makeup products with therapeutic benefits that would perfectly match their skin tone, be affordable, well tolerated by even the most sensitive skin, and achieve a perfectly natural, flawless effect.” Lofty goals, certainly! Cover FX manages to accomplish much of these with a line that has grown and been well curated over the years.
Many of the options within Cover FX offer medium to full coverage, but whenever serious camouflage is needed, there is a trade-off to accept that it won’t always look totally natural. To their credit, Cover FX's full coverage options look more natural on skin than many (and their expansive color options helps quite a bit).
If you don't need full coverage, there are several other products from Cover FX worth considering, from their Cream Concealer, Priming Serum to their Skin Tint, Custom Cover Drops and makeup brushes. This isn't a comprehensive makeup line (for example, you won't find eyeshadows, pencils, or mascara), but they are a cosmetics line that understands what it does best—and sticks with it.
Cover FX has an admirable goal in wanting to help people who have scars or discolorations face the world with their head held high. Without question, the right makeup can make a huge difference in such a person’s self-esteem, and as Cover FX has evolved over the years, they’ve launched impressive and unique formulas. There are a few that need work due to their use of potentially irritating ingredients—but fortunately, these are few and far between.
